When I was a kid my parents limited me to one can or bottle of soda per week, on Saturday night (hamburger night!)  I suppose I owe it to them that I still drink only two or three a week at the most.

I'm pretty sure that the gas you guys are producing is at least partially methane.

I've had this test idea for a few days now....been too busy to try it though. I want to take two identical pieces of metal, like two nails or two pieces of coat hanger or something like that. Bend each of them 90 degrees, then back straight again, then back 90 degrees. The idea being to induce some stress micro-fractures at the bending point. Important to bend both pieces excactly the same, the exact number of times.

Then place one piece of metal in a cup of Coca Cola. Set the other piece aside. After one day, continue the bending-back-and-forth process. Count the number of bendings until the metal breaks. Which piece breaks first? Is there a significant difference in the bend count between the two pieces?

If you let the cola go flat would it retain some of the rust removing properties? And would it be safe?

Well I don't think it would become an incendiary device, if that is what you are asking.

If you can narrow down (use the internet, it's great for research, as well as porn) what the ingredient in Cola is that assists rust removal, you should be able to work out if being flat affects it.

You could also probably then go and buy something with a higher concentration of that ingredient and be more effective about rust removal

Well, supposedly it's the carbonation which means pouring coke syrup isn't helpful...
