Famously, the fish scaler, like the hook, is another one of those tools many think they have no use for. I have plenty of uses for the hook, but not fish scaler, as quite frankly, any blade can be used for scaling fish. Most of my friends, who catch and eat, while I catch and release, don't scale fish.
I first found that the hook remover was great at straightening the axles on old toy cars with the thin wire axles. As a collector of old Matchbox and other brands, finding this use saved a lot of annoyance and damage (I actually caused the base to bend on an off-brand fire engine one time using a modified MOLLE clip!).
Looking at some cheap pumpkin carving sets at the local grocery store, I got the idea to use the fish scaler on my 50-year old Fisherman junker, as the fish scaler, awl, and the openers layer are all that are OK. Everything else needs to be replaced. It actually cost me the least of all my SAKs at $5, so I figured "Why not? .
