Bought a New SAK today, Which SAK is your favorite?
on: January 18, 2007, 02:07:19 AM
I bought a new SAK today.  I went to the mom and pops hardware store out of boredom today and I seen a sak that I have been thinking about getting for a while.  I bought a new Explorer.  I got it for cheaper than I could get it online and it was already there.  So I thought it was a good idea.  I have always desired the magnifying glass feature.

Anyway, I was wondering what is yall's favorite SAK, and why.  I like the 4 layer 91mm format.  It is the right blend of size and # of tools.  I have liked the explorer for some time and it just so happens there was one down the street.  What a great knife.  So, what is your favorite SAK?

I have numerous favorites, and I rotate through them depending on my mood.

Some are:
OHT
Soldier
EVOGrip 18
Nail Clipper
Farmer
Camper

I agree with Def, It's hard for me to pic my favorite SAK. I like the  SwissChamp, SwissChamp XLT, Farmer, Soldier, OHT, and StayGlow Climber.

I have two Swiss Champs that I never carry one I bought for my dad (deceased) as a Father's Day gift, the other was given to me by my aunt (also deceased). Those are my favorites for sentimental reasons.

But my true favorites would be the farmer, soldier, explorer, spartan, and climber

Someday when one of you guys with a camera gets a moment, could you post a few side-by-side pics of these various SAKs? I don't have any  :( and would like a perspective on the various lengths (91mm?) and thicknesses (4-layer). Thanks!

Nice pics.  The Sta-Glo climber is neat.  Glow in the dark is always a good thing.  Especially when a flashlight has disappeared and you need to find your SAK.  There was a SAK hiding out in my old truck that I though I had lost.  I found it when I cleaned it out before I traded it in.  Sta-Glo would have helped.

I would like to say that the SAK tinker is also a great tool.  It just lacks the corkscrew.  I am always looking to pop a cork and I can never find mine.  Which is another reason I bought the explorer. :)

These are the models I have been carrying regularly:

Golfer (w/long nail file)
Ranger
Yeoman
OHT
Farmer

The Ranger, Yeoman, Farmer and OHT are the ones I carry most.  The Golfer I carry to work to supplement the Cybertool 34 in my briefcase.

NutSAK,

You carry a golfer?  I bought my dad one of those for christmas.  He spends every hour he is not at work on the course.  I am quite fond of the ranger.  It is my work knife.  I have had it at work with me everyday for some 4 years now.  Great knife.

Golfer or Golf Tool?  They are two different models...

Actually more than two models, but that's getting technical!

Def

As Def has pointed out, many Victorinox models have been named the Golfer.  The particular one I carry is like the 91mm Compact (current production), but it is built on the 84mm frame and has a long nail file/nail cleaner on the backspring side instead of the parcel hook.  It is a discontinued model, and one that I find is a very useful tool in a tidy, 2-layer package.

Here's a pic:

BTW...  I don't golf.  ;)

Regarding the Ranger, I couldn't agree more with you CQC-7.  The Huntsman model is well-loved for good reason, but I like the 3 extra tools you get in a Ranger with just one more layer.  Those three are the chisel, small screwdriver and the very useful metal file/saw.

That looks exactly like mine.  I love those inlaid metal "camping" scales.

FYI...  Some of the camping scales just have the word "camping" embossed and screened onto the scales.  The inlaid ones are MUCH nicer!

OOH, That Golfer!  I am thinking of the golfer that is just like that one but it has a "divot" tool for repairing pitch marks on the green instead of the longer nail file.  It also would make a handy fork in a pinch.  The newer golf tool is of little or no interest to me it is just a pitch mark repair tool with a nail file.

I like the Huntsman for outdoors/walking/climbing use.  I also am loving my modded Climber (I added plus scales, thanks Rotokid) as a EDC.  The Ranger looks like a potential good companion for my Kick....more money on SAKs!!

I finally broke down and bought an alox soldier.  I haven't recieved it yet but it looks like a fine knife.  I have read that the alox models are great.  I'll have to see how much I like it when I get it.  It is a bit plain though.  One of those last minute impulse buys.

My favorite pocket model is the Farmer. As for belt sheath EDC, it's the Outrider (mine is being modded into a OH version).

I just recieved an alox soldier in the mail today.  I like it but I was suprised to see that the blade is slightly larger than that of the standard SAK.  It is a very simple knife.  A few things I need day to day and nothing I dont need.  Although I do miss the fact that it doesent have a phillips screwdriver like my other SAKs.

The small screwdriver tip on the can opener is well known for use on phillips screws.  It's actually quite effective, and may have been designed to fit phillips.  I am not sure if it was or not, but it does the job well enough that it could have been!

I did try it out today on a few phillips screws.  Yeah, it does work.  Is it a phillips, no; but it will work in a pinch.

I have the Tinker. It's a nice plain model with a good selection of tools. A very good value for less than $20.

Where do you guys get the yellow handle models? Are they limited edition? Can you get any model in yellow? The only yellow handle model I've seen in person was the real small keychain model. The owner told me he bought it in Switzwerland. The One hand trekker would be neat in yellow. I'm considering the Trekker for my next purchase and it would be neat to get one in yellow.

Like many others, my favorites are the 58mm SAKs.  I especially like the ones with the magnetic Phillips driver/bottle opener (see photo).  I sometimes carry the Spartan Lite at night when the light might come in handy.  But I typically just carry the Rambler and a pliers-based multi-tool of some sort.

Hurricane Bob, There is a Sta-Glo climber model if that is what you are lookiing for.  They are really cool.  I just got that new SAK rescue tool with the staglo handles and it would be easily spotted in the dark.  I too have a tinker that I bought not long ago at Wal-Mart for $7 on sale it is a good companion.

As for the 58mm SAKs, I cannot say if I like them becasue I have never owned one.  I guess I'll have to see for myself and get one soon. :)

I'll be looking into the Sta Glo, and yellow models. It sucks because the stores around here don't stock much. Lowe's still has the best (limited) selection. The guy at a local sporting goods store told me most of the independent stores have a limited selection because they can't price as competitively as the larger chains so they end up sitting on their stock forever.

Hurricane Bob,

Try Felinevets shop at www.sosakonline.com!  Felinevet aka Tim has every SAK you can think of.  I just recieved a new Vic rescue tool from him a few days ago.  I can say that his prices are some of the best around and he has free shipping.

A note on the sta-glo, WEAR SUNGLASSES those things are bright! :)

For me it's a three way tie : The Electrician plus ( with saw )
                                        The Soldier
                                         The Farmer

Cant go wrong with any one of them , the sheepsfoot blade on the Electrician is one of my all time faves .

I like the sheepsfoot blade shape as well.  It was the most used blade on my old stockman.  I like my alox soldier a lot.  It is small and light yet rugged.
