Lemme Axe You Something
on: August 20, 2008, 12:43:26 AM
I'm never going to get sick of that lame axe joke.... :P

Anyways, my Ontario Knives Spec Plus SPAX arrived today, and I am pretty pleased with it so far.  It's a bit shorter than I was expecting, but also a little heavier.  It's got a really good heft to it, but I'm certain that has much to do with this bugger being made from 1/4" stock!

The main edge isn't terribly sharp, but then this thing isn't supposed to be sharp really- it's more for bull work and extracting people from mangled car wrecks and the like, and for that, it seems like it would work quite well.  It's extremely solid feeling, and the molded handle is very comfortable in the hand, although that probably isn't important as I'm pretty sure this thing was made to be used while wearing work gloves.  Having seen and attended more than a few accidents in my time, I can say the process goes much better when you have something to protect your hands!  Still, a good handle is a good handle, and it's nice to see they didn't skimp on it.

The little edge on the back of the head is supposedly great for pounding through safety glass (like a windshield) then using it as a hook to pull it free.  Again, it looks like it would be effective, but I'll have to wait until after dark, when my neighbors aren't around to see for sure!   >:D  The odd shaped hole in the middle is designed to be used as a large wrench for fire hydrants, which will also have to wait until after dark to test!

The sheath is a nicely made affair, with the front side being cordura, and the back side is real leather, with rivets holding them both together.  The SPAX is held in securely by three snaps, and the leather belt loop is held to the rest of the sheath by a large black coated steel D-ring, which allows it to swivel and hang loosely.  This is important, because otherwise the handle could get stuck in your ribs when sitting down.

It seems like a really interesting tool, although probably not for EDC... except maybe for any firefighters or rescue workers.  It does seem like a good idea to keep it in the trunk for any emergencies you may come across, which is great, because that's pretty well why I bought it!

It does kind of look like a Klingon blade, doesn't it!  :D

If I was a bloodthirsty space warrior though, I think I'd prefer to carry this:

Or Han Solo's Blastech DL44...

Although I probably shouldn't admit that I even know the model of Han Solo's gun!   :o

At any rate, the SPAX seems like it could be a pretty handy tool to have handy off road as well as on.  I'll bet you could use this thing as a pretty heavy duty pry bar as well- like I said, it's 1/4" steel, and pretty darned solid.

Tactical Knives is a good magazine, and I enjoy it, but they never see the drawbacks in anything.  Each and every knife they "review" is the best thing to have ever been created, and I find that particular bit annoying.  While there`s really nothing wrong with that, if someone wanted sunshine blown up their butt about a product, they could visit a salesman or the manufacturer`s website.  I don`t feel that`s terribly accurate.  Still, that`s the way they run their business, and I run mine differently.

So, a good review in TK magazine doesn`t really impress me much!

By the way, is the shape (not the pentagon shape I know you said that's for hydrants but the notch and box) in the middle suppose to mean/do something?

My only arrest was in Pearson International Airport in Toronto, for weapons smuggling, but that's a story for another time! :P

The cutout in the SPAX has changed somewhat throughout it's lifespan, but I don't see it on the Ontario Knives homepage, so I'm wondering if it's been discontinued.  I'll send them an email to see if they can provide some info.
