Case XX Changer - Beyond Repair?
on: November 03, 2015, 05:33:40 AM
So I found my father's old Case XX Blade Changer in the toolbox a few years ago.

Sheath was shot, and the knife blades are just about blown to smithereens.

For those of you who don't know the premise, the Case XX Changer comes with 4 blades (Drop Point, Fillet, Saw, and either a Utility or a Gut Hook depending on model)

And by opening the blade halfway (90°) to the handle, you can slip one blade out and put in another.

Now, I pulled it out tonight and was looking at the damage done and I don't think it is repairable. I was going to see if someone could re profile them all and I reached out to Nays Custom Leather for a new sheath but I don't think it's worth it.

The sentimental value is obviously high, but for almost a the same price I could get him a new set.

Opinions? The handle itself needs a lot of work as well.

It also seems really odd to me that the drop point chipped in the middle like that.

Defective steel? Or weird abuse?

Most likely abuse. I vote for re profiling it yourself. Go for a recurve shape.

to reprofile use a file and some stones. If you use a dremel tool, have a cup of water handy to  keep things cool

Thanks guys, Zoidbergs idea of a recurve sounds perfect.

I'll have to buy a new dremel first, I went through 3 of them this summer!!

Seems like the motors just don't last.

Either you are very hard on your dremels or you got 3 duds.

If they were older model Dremils then could it be the motor brush?  I have an older one that stuttered which turned out to be a brush.

The first 2 to go out were the lithium cordless 4400s I believe, first the batteries went out, so we ordered 2 more and before the batteries could go, the motors completely fried.

The third one was a plug in model that is a little bit older, it lasted most the summer but if got to hot it would shut off, and to use it again you'd have to let it cool, and then bang it on something. (Which also helped with frustration)

We are pretty hard on them, in all reality they held up better than expected.

Most of our use is grinding and sharpening chainsaw bits.

The commutator burnt out on mine. The brushes were fine, but the com was totally smurfed! I'm waiting for the right bargain to come along to get another
