Compact Appreciation

The Compact is a very complete, yet minimal tool, an essential, yet (or because of that) priced like a luxury item, as we have established elsewhere. Show off your luxury essentials™ here.

My latest, a white vintage Compact "AEG Olympia" without a hook:

I like the Compact as I prefer to save a layer by having a combo tool instead of a committed opener layer.  But I also like having a small pen blade.

I've got a Serrated Spartan on order and I am thinking of making a double large bladed Compact.

Large blade / combo tool
Scissors
Serrated blade / Small pen blade
(Oh, and probably a back sided Phillips instead of a cork screw.)

This is a Yeoman I made from a Compact and added the magnifier/in-line Phillips layer.

Yeomans got a special spot reserved in my MT-heart...

Windson- Those compacts are sweet!  I've been meaning to ask what wire you use for your danglers, btw...

Thanks Sheradin!

The silver danglers are recycled coat hangers from the chemical laundry; the copper ones are from those Ikea carrying handles (there is a making-of that I posted somewhere around here).

Fantastic. Thanks for the tip! I have a coat hanger or two around here, and, oddly enough, my wife likes Ikea. Roadtrip!!!   :)

Hope I don't derail your thread but here's my Compact/Golfer(ish) appreciation.

Paid as much for one of those Compacts as some junk lots and more than some large layer SAKs. Learned my lesson. No more than $16 shipped for a Compact.

Plus this broken Timekeeper...It counts.

A few went into mods

The red scaled one down here got a phillips and Onyx scale swap. Absolutely beautiful IMO.

Also have a 84mm Golfer, but cant find the image. Love it and want more.

The Compact I believe is essentially the most complete minimalist tool set for urban EDC. Woods walk or laboring, no.
I'm looking at getting a few more. One hopefully this week if the auction goes my way.

I just got my first, love it.

I do have a question, what differentiates a 91mm Golfer from a Compact with no hook?

Kosmo, great mod! The one you have planned sounds super cool too.

Nothing; they're the same knife. The Compact originally came out in 1986, as Victorinox was phasing out the 84mm Golfer. As they are wont to do, they simply stuck the "Golfer" name on the larger model. Incidentally, they did the same with the Super Tinker as well. Old catalogs show the Super Tinker as an 84mm knife. Once this is phased out in the 80s, the name becomes attached to the 91mm version.

This worked fine until around 1992 or so when they introduced the divot repair tool. The divot repair tool replaces the combo tool in the "Golfer" and keeps the name, since it IS more appropriate to call the knife with the divot tool a "Golfer". So now they have to rename the original combo-tool version, which becomes the Compact. Since the hook was introduced around the same time, many people tend to think "hook = Compact", "no hook = Golfer". Personally I call them all Compacts. There are too many damn Golfers as it is.

That would mean that the white Compact in the OP is a Golfer as well. Good to know.

+1 to all the above!

No shortage of Golfer/Compact love here, be they 84mm or 91mm!   :ahhh   And thanks to JB for the history/background on these.  :salute:

Now if we could just cleanly replace the hook on the post-91 Compacts with a reamer, the world would be a better place.  Here are pix of:

  • A Pioneer, StayGlow Compact, and an 84mm Golfer
  • A late-80's 91mm Golfer refurbished with Plus scales
  • A modded 84mm Golfer with Phillips replacing the CS

They are a little expensive, but you have a lot of expensive stuff (scissors, plus scales) in it.

Here's mine with a LM Squirt P4.  Two great little tools.

I have a few others, but these two get carried the most. The Timekeeper gets a lot of special occasion use.  :)

I do love the concept of the Compact, but the combo tool completely ruins the whole thing for me. I just wish it had either the standard cap lifter or the standard can opener. I really wish the combo tool was replaced with a small blade.

I hear you JD, I have a number of SAKs lined up for rotation, Champion, Explorer, Syph Custom Alox, Pioneer, and two Compacts - and the vast majority of days, I default to the Compact even going back and exchanging my first pick to a Compact. For general, urban EDC, it's simply enough. (Now, I'm curious whether my newly acquired Trail Guide is able to change that.)
