on: October 26, 2015, 05:17:32 PM
I been looking at their assisted opening, not auto out the front knives, very interesting, liking the schotf7. Anybody has experience with them?

Well you and I are in the same state, why you think this is illegal?

I know it is illegal. OTF's are grouped with a switchblade. Only way to legally carry one is if the blade is 1.9" or smaller.

Legal mumbo jumbo to prove I am right.  :D

Technically you can own a OTF or switchblade (with a blade over 1.9") in your home and you can transport one in your trunk.

"switchblade knife" means a knife
having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade
knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife, or any other similar type
knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more inches in length
and which can be released automatically by a flick of a button,
pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device,
or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of
mechanism whatsoever
.

"Switchblade knife" does not include a knife
that opens with one hand utilizing thumb pressure applied solely to
the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to the blade,
provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism that provides
resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or that
biases the blade back toward its closed position.

If I am reading this correctly, to determine if a knife is switchblade, has nothing to do with where the blade comes but how it comes out. Assisted opening knives are not switchblades. I am under the impression that OTF7 is legal in CA. I emailed Schrade for some clarification.

The appearance (OTF styling) may make it more hassle than it's worth trying to explain that it's assisted and not auto.

I'm curious if Schrade would clarify anything of a legal nature. Most manufacturers I've seen, won't comment or get involved.

I know that even though it's assisted and legal here, the appearance of an OTF auto (no matter how cool) would cause no end of grief. Considering the size, ergos and steel, it just wouldn't add up for me.

(FWIW I still think it's cool though and would love to own an OTF.)

You are correct.

Excuse my ignorance, but I did not look at the actual action used to open the knife before commenting. I had just woken up.  I thought we were talking a standard OTF here.

This is very interesting. Technically this should be perfectly legal in CA as you are applying pressure solely to the blade or thumb stud.

Thank you for bringing this knife to my attention.  :tu:

I've handled a couple of the Schrades (the only type of OTF that's legal in Canada).  Not really worth the hassle, honestly.  You get all the downsides of an OTF knife (large size, wobbly blade lockup) and it's not particularly easy to open because of where you have to grip the knife.

That's one thing I noticed when watching the video. Looks like you have to grip the knife strangely to be able to access the thumb stud properly.

According to most laws, assisted opening and switchblades are two separate things, since with an ASO knife, you've got to apply pressure to the blade itself. As a result, they're legal where switchblades aren't.   I carried a Colonial Quick Flick (the new Chinese crap, not the old indestructible USA Colonials), and the blade opened itself in my pocket, cutting a hole all the way through.

I personally like to avoid assisted knives, as for one, they're an accident waiting to happen and secondly, I could be in serious trouble if it somehow gets confused for a switchblade. And, as mentioned before, law enforcement will still consider it a switchblade, so it doesn't go in my pocket, let alone in public.

Thank you for contacting Taylor Brands.  Our out the front assisted opening knives are assisted opening.  They are federally legal.  All knife laws very state to state, city to city, county to county.  We are able to ship our out the front assisted opening knives to all of our distributors and dealers in the state of California.  The only ones we cannot ship to CA are double edged blades.  You will need to check with your local government on the knife laws in your area.  You can also get information on knife laws at www.AKTI.org

Yes, give me 7 days.

I had it for 7 hours and I been playing with it nonstop, fired the blade at least 500 times already.
