Alternate uses for the Spey blade
on: March 21, 2024, 11:28:05 PM
The Spey blade was designed for a very specific purpose which I doubt many of the millions of the various stockmans ever produced were  used for, not for many years anyway.

So I was interested what other uses you have found for this blade if any that it has proved more suited to than the other two blades.

My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

I use it for pretty much everything.  I open letters, cut cardboard, and anything else I use a knife for.  Even growing up on a farm, I never saw it used for it's intended purpose.  Actually, no one I knew in those days carried a knife with a spey blade.  Everyone had either a Barlow or a Buck 110.

I like it because there's no point on it to damage anything.

I've used the spey blade for its intended purpose. Turned a lot bulls into steers. It's also good for skinning. Now a days I use it for things a don't want to risk poking a hole in. It's a good butter spreader.   :D
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

As Barry says, the spey blade will work fine for pretty much any task that doesn’t require a sharp point.

Personally, if I have a typical three-blade stockman with large clip, small sheepsfoot, and small spey, then the sheepsfoot is my general utility blade, the spey is my cigar cutter, and the clip is held in reserve for tasks that benefit from its additional length and or more acute point.

Now, if we’re talking about a knife that has (typically) a large spey blade and a large clip point blade (e.g. Trapper, Moose), then the clip point is my general utility/dirty blade, while the spey blade is my clean blade for cigars, food, etc.
