Work in progress: display cabinet
on: November 05, 2015, 11:58:33 PM
I decided to make a wall-mounted display cabinet for my SAKs.  I'll post pictures as it progresses.

My first step was to cut these two pieces from a 1x4 and rout an ogee profile on 3 sides.  They will be the the top and bottom of the cabinet.  Some hardware arrived too, including a nice brass lock that was quite reasonably priced and made in England (who says we don't make anything any more :))

Thread would be better if cabinet was constructed using only materials and an SAK.   >:D

Keep us posted though.  :salute:

Good point... shame Victorinox don't have a model with circular saw, router and no.5 jack plane attachments :D  I will make sure to use a SAK at least once in the construction.

This is going to look great :tu:

Although, I worry about that lock... shouldn't you have a biometric scanner or something to keep your collection safe :D

Rain today so it doesn't look like I'll have much chance to get outside and use any power tools.  So this morning I cut the sides by hand from a planed 1x3 board.  Not fixed together yet, I've just set it up dry to get an impression of the proportions.

Coming along nicely Shibafu!  :tu: Nice to break out the hand tools, slower but kind of satisfying.  :)

I cut the parts for the door as well, from 1x2.  And drilled some pocket holes in the sides, for screws to join the sides to the top and bottom.  These holes will be covered by the shelf supports so they won't be seen in the finished piece.  I need to rout out mortices for the hinges before I can assemble the case though, I won't be able to get in there to do it afterwards.  Hoping for some sunshine tomorrow so I can do that.

SAKs don't adapt to you, you adapt to the SAK. Find a way to do it with the SAKsaw and other tools.

Routing out mortices for the hinges using a simple jig.  The router leaves round corners so you have to square up the corners afterward with a chisel.  (I wonder if anyone makes butt hinges with rounded corners?)  I made the jig slightly too wide - you might be able to see on the second photo where I glued a brass shim to one side to make the mortice snugly fit the hinge.

Making the joints for the door.  Another simple jig makes it easy to make all the mortices, in conjunction with a 3/4" guide bush and a long 1/4" cutter.
I'm doing "loose tenon" joints.  Both halves of the joint get identical mortices, then you glue in a separate tenon, which I've made from 1/4" birch plywood, to join them together.

It's the first time I've tried this method of joinery and so far I'm liking it.  With the jig it's much simpler to do than conventional mortice-and-tenon.  It's even possible to compensate for twisted stock by shimming the jig with pieces of paper, so that the mortice ends up slightly off parallel to the face.  I had to do that for the top rail of my door as it has a slight twist in it, and a dry fit suggests it's done the trick.

There was some SAK involvement today :)  I realised I had to remove the guide bush to change router bits, and had forgotten to take a phillips screwdriver outside with me, so out came the trusty Explorer.  I also used the small blade for a couple of marking tasks.

Final job of the day: using my makeshift router table to make rebates in the sides, top and bottom of the case, to receive the back panel.  The sides get through-rebates; the top and bottom need stopped rebates.  I'll square up the ends of those with a chisel after the case is assembled.

That's the last of the machining operations before I can start assembly, so hopefully I can at least get the door glued up during the week.  Maybe the carcass as well, but I'll hold off on that until the door comes out of the clamps, in case any adjustments are required.

I'm with you firiki, unfortunatley my attempts at woodworking just end up as firewood :twak:

Hopfully you'll get some decent weather shibafu so you can do the bits outside that you couldnt at the weekend :salute:

I managed to get the door glued up last night.  Took it out of the clamps this morning and it's come out square and flat :tu:

The second photo is of the top-right corner.  You can see how the face of the joint is not flush, as a result of the adjustment I made for the twist in the top rail.  It's much better to have this, which can easily be sanded smooth, than to have the joint flush but the verticals of the door out of parallel, which would result in a much larger error over the full height of the door.

Sorry to disappoint, but there will be no door handle... clean lines, you see :)  The door will be opened by the key only.  Now I can tell you the final colour, or should I make you wait? :)
