Congrats Chrono

I just bought that same REI Signal for my best friend for Christmas. My girl keeps looking at it asking me if I'm sure I wouldn't rather keep it and give him something else. So far I'm holding fast

I can see  there is a lot of reversal taking place - opinions now compared to prior to the Signal' s release. And I would tend to take more to heart reviews and comments made after handling the tool. Some folks who previously balled at the design may now have one and like it.

However, we can like something while not exactly using it for the intended purpose. Like an old cardbodrd box zip tied to the grill of an 18-wheeler in the winter...it definitely serves a purpose, but it sure isn't the one intended when designed.

Or more like a store bought frozen Boston Creme Pie. Pretty tasty dessert but as a Boston Creme Pie, it actually sucks.

I don't own one nor have I so much as committed frottage with a Signal outside of the package, so maybe I'm all wet...

But I look at what and who this was geared towards, and scratch my head at so many design choices.

1) it should be stainless or otherwise brightly colored. You will need to find it, if you need it. Maybe even use a highly polished surface as a...signal...
2) whistle should be integral to one of the handles and made of SS. Never lose it.
3) Ferro rod should screw in somewhere or be secured by cable lanyard. Again, never lose it.
4) replace loose bit with dedicated driver. So. You. Don't...lose...it.
5) sharpening file should also screw into its storage. See the end of #'s 2, 3, & 4.
6) 420 HC is fine. Harder steel is harder to sharpen. But a spill over rocks with the knife blade open will do in even a much "nicer" blade. Besides, a better blade steel would up the price, and this is already...
7) over priced.
-8- hex tools (3 of them) seem to serve little purpose other than cheaply bumping up the tool count, just to try and justify this thing and its price, try to make it seem close to SURGE in tool count.

There. I said it.

But if I get one for Christmas I sure wouldn't complain...

The only point I would agree with is number 7, it is overpriced.

I agree this tool is overpriced. I got the standard one before, and sold it. I do not like the plastic pieces. I think it offers less for money, compared to the reliable Wave.

But... don't the dark green and the topo paint jobs look cool? My price point for a new Signal is about $60. I need to be extremely lucky to get that. And I don't want to pay $110 + tax that REI want. Then came eBay with one at $85. I just had to do it.  :P Now only if I could score a TTC Damascus blade for cheap

Oh yeah, they look awesome. Just not practical for it's (original) intended purpose.

Chrono, I’ve played with the TTC blade. It’s ground wrong, rubs on the awl and is very soft. I wouldn’t waste my money.

100% correct. My Damascus blade is back in the drawer. I would not buy one if I had the opportunity to have a look at it first inside the tool.

I own the signal for two years now and i am not impress with it, its my week ended tools and the lack of scissor really piss me off, the chance i get to buy a new wave i will, the usability of the tool is very limited, the fire rod barely work the files is useless its so small and the head of the plier should have been put in the wave instead wich i will do when i buy a new wave, really tired of leatherman not evolving , the new tool with dual colour is not a move its a distraction for hypster, they need to step there game

Email the pics to yourself, it should reduce them enough.
