I took my wave camping and got a number of rust spots, was easy to remove with just a little lubricant and a rag..but it still urks me. Honestly I prefer the signal more as an EDC than as a camping tool. For woods, especially wet woods, I prefer the Victorinox Spirit or a BO ST300. I like the removable items on the signal, but they are 100% backup and don’t help with tasks on a day to day as much. Surprisingly, I’ve found the whistle and the other components of the Signal to make a very ideal EDC, but I think they completely missed the mark on a “camping” multitool, it is more of a “survival” MT. The blade is completely awesome! Super robust, but should have been plain edge for wood work. It has a great tool set for an OH smurf! moment however, I’d always rather have a tool that has no removable components so that I am less likely to lose things in the woods. I think ones you try a BO ST300 (not rebar because of the thin blades) you will see what I mean. I am eyeing the red and black Signal so maybe my opinions will change...I dont know.

I carry the signal nearly every day (although mine is heavily modded). I just rather have something more heft as a dedicated woodmans tool.

I recently learned about the Signal and been looking for some opinions, especially on the usefulness of the more unique aspects (ferro, hammer, sharpener, whistle).  Your comment was very helpful.

Found today to my surprise that a ferro rod on my Signal has cracked. Still works, but I feel kinda unsure of its reliability more and more... No idea how and why that happened, I know I can buy a replacement, the whistle is perfectly fine and so on.... Has any of you guys seen anything like that happening to your Signals?

Bad luck,  alex :-\ at least a replacement can be bought but how much actual use did your ferro rod get  I know you use it some but how much :salute:

I think you illustrated exactly why I feel the ferro rod attachment is best left completely as a worst case option. But I'd talk to leatherman about it.

Cheers

Exactly, I used it only two times in order to just try if it works and is usable at all...

How exactly do you suggest talking to LM? Is there an instrument for feedback?

My new Cerakote Crimson color ;)..
Out of the the 4 new Signal colors, the Crimson Cerakote finish tend to hold up a lot better. I first ordered the Aqua but unfortunately the coating is like the un-famous orange Wave, you can see it spread all over the pliers and saw blade after several opening/closing. Called LM and they are aware of the issues and working to make sure the cerakote colors hold up better. A prepaid return label was sent to me so the Aqua went back to LM the following day.

Has anyone else had issues with the lock slipping? I bumped the spine of mine on a cabinet and the lock released. Doesn’t take much pressure at all. Tried it on two other Signals with the same result.

Now that you mentioned, I dropped mine on the sidewalk by accident without any issue at all with the lock, still secure and tight, but now the black coating chipped off on one side of the hammer, it's not pretty anymore :(

When it first came out people were wondering if it was a Survival Multitool....

I'm not sure what it was actually marketed as.

So it's been quite some time since I've discovered that crack on a ferro rod of my Signal and I have to say it didn't change a bit of it's functionality - still works, no more cracking and, basically, there's nothing to worry about. I know that now, however I have bought a spare whistle + ferro rod just in case back in a day  :multi:
