While reading through Ben's thread http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,6282.0.html and looking at all the link's and picture's, I just couldn't get excited by all those folder's :-\, there's nothing wrong with them, for the most part there bloody fine knives, but there lacking in that one intangible thing...soul :(

Generally speaking that's to a charge you can't level at a decent slip joint :)

They may be old hat, and past there prime, but they were good enough for our father's and great grandfathers, and there's still a lot to be said for there utility, look's and shear inoffensiveness, not to mention the fact that a good usable one is a fraction of the cost off a decent modern OH folder :)

So please show us your picture's or links to your favourite Trapper's, Congressman's, Sodbusters, Sowbelly, Whittler's and Muskrats :)

I think these qualify as "great grandfathers", because I was told they are from 1930's.  :D They came together with the capsul multi I showed the other day. Duno really know what I'll do with them, they are oiled up and sitting in a sandwich bag together with the multi.

Nice collection mate :)

It's such a shame Schrade went the way off the Dodo :(, they made some excellent budget slippies :)

That last Damascus one is simply gorgeous mate

If it's a good one then it's a proper Schrade :), if it's a piece of crap, then it's a Taylor Craplery one ::)

Yes you would- they are usually pretty obvious.

The most easily defined feature will be on the blade tang, where it says either China or USA.  If it's China, then it's a Taylor Cutlery piece of crap.  If the joints and seams are large enough to park an economy car in, it's a Taylor Cutlery piece of crap.  If it snaps in half and bursts into flames when you try to use it, it's a Taylor Cutlery piece of crap.  If you spend hours sharpening it and the edge is still too round to open an envelope, it's a Taylor Cutlery piece of crap.  If you bought it more than three years ago, it's a real Schrade, which honestly wasn't the best quality knife out there, but it beats the pants off the Taylor Cutlery hunks of crap.

Basically, if it's a Taylor Cutlery model, it will be obvious.

By the way, I don't know if I've mentioned this yet but Taylor Cutlery really sucks.  The best part about Taylor Cutlery being a bunch of cheap barstids?  They know their stuff is crap, which is why I haven't been sued yet.  However, they also don't care, because they go to bed at night on mattresses stuffed with money, dreaming about what else they can make the 5 year olds in the sweatshops make for them so they can make even more money.  All while waving Old Glory in people's faces and showing photos of brave US troops in war zones, carrying Schrades.  My guess is they are either pre-Taylor Schrades or those soldiers aren't with us today, or are models posing on tanks.  The only good news is, Taylor knives suck so bad, they fail long before they are needed for a life threatening situation.

Interestingly, the company is actually called "Taylor Brands"

but everyone has been calling it Taylor Cutlery since I said the wrong thing five posts ago...

(I shouldn't have mentioned it)

Now that we've decided Schrade is not the choice -

What about Buck?m (Though I was looking at their lockbacks, so maybe not the right topic)

Since Taylor hasn't responded to my challenge to prove me wrong, I am thinking of getting a Taylor brand POS and doing a passaround to see what others think of it.  The problem is, for the cost of postage on one of those hunks of crap, you could feed it's "skilled" craftstoddlers for three months.

Still not convinced?  Look at this old thread comparing the US made Schrade Tough Tool and the new Taylor made Tough Tool:

Taylor Brands Schrade ST1 by J-Sews

Or this one, with the regression fully illustrated:

Schrade ST1 Variations by J-Sews

If I was Monsieur Taylor, I probably wouldn't be bothered much by the opinion of one (or even many) forum goers, because, as you say, I'd be having too much fun rolling in my wads of cash with my nubile pleasure slaves.

Hi folks,

My first post on the open forums so hello. I have always carried a pocket knife and my current slipjoints are as follows.

From top, the Spyderco DKPK or Denmark Penknife is one which was made specifically to be carried in Denmark where one handed opening is barred. So it originally had a chamfered opening hole. I used the Dremel to remove the bevel and it would be my most modern knife. Next is one from Jeff Cover and then one from his father, Ray. The bottom two are James Barber ERA slippies and have been well used. One was my fathers and the other belonged to my uncle.

I enjoy changing them about from day to day and one is always in my trouser pocket.

Mark

Well, I don't have many. Someday I'll start buying some, cause I like slippies a  lot, especially the smaller ones. Here's the only two I have that I actually care much about, as they have sentimental value. One on the left is my dad's, on the right my grandpa's.
