dks,
Thankfully there are others out there that brought back defunct brands and are having them made the way they should be, and in some cases likely better than they were. You want to really get blown away by quality, save your pennies and get yourself a Northfield from Great Eastern Cutlery. Now there is a brand being made as good, if not better, than they were 100 years ago.

2xTap

I am thinking about it and have for some time but I usually end up buying a couple of cheaper knives for the same money. The problem is not so much the cost as the fact that for that money I would like to be able to select the knife myself. I have in the past had to sent knives back because I did not like the way they looked and usually insist on seeing several pictures of available knives before deciding which one to buy, but unless you actually have it in your hands it is difficult to just part with the money and hope for the best. With mass produced products, like multitools you usually get the product you expect and all same model products look 99% the same.
With slipjoints you have to think about colour of scales, fit, spring tension, look of scales etc..
One day, when I find a shop, for sure!

after collecting knives for a year, I'm starting to accept that just about every slightly upmarket knife that I buy will have some sort of flaw - gaps in the backsprings, blade not centred. It makes me happy when I occasionally get something perfect. I would like to get a few american slipjoints, I can't see them in shops here, so I'll just have to buy according to reputation, and my impressions from reviews on forums.

dks,

I know what you mean bud, the problem with companies like Great Eastern is that they are small so they don't have many actual shops that sell their products. Nearly all of their sales are on-line. Also, all their runs of knives are very short run production.....so they don't make large quantities, which allows them to maintain a high level of quality control.

With Great Eastern you don't have to worry, their focus is on building knives the way they use to be built. In a few short years they have become the standard of quality that many use to judge others by. Right now, no production company builds consistantly knives to the level of quality that GEC does.

They are that good, but for that quality they ain't exactly cheap either. So I do understand where you are coming from. It is not easy to throw down a good chunk of cash on something you can't actually see in person and handle first before you buy.

I got this, reasonably priced, German made Buck Creek "Cobra" model.

Two blades, sharing a backspring.

looks a bit like a snake sssssss

Interesting, though a bit fake looking, Stag; the main reason I got it.
Two shields

thank you. it is quite unusual. I am currently trying to get over my fear of "what if it is not to my liking" and get a GEC, instead of buying several lower priced knives. feel free to send any sugestions in respect to model series or sellers. I am currently having a, shy, look on ebay.

Inherited a tiny Richards shefield penknife, from the UK

And got a new Higonokami. This is supposedly made by the only remaining licensed maker in Japan.

from the seller:

"Kanekoma Nagao Higonokami assort Est.1894♦
The most famous Japanese traditional pocket knives.
What Nagao produced is only genuine HIGONOKAMI.
Higonokami is his registered trade mark in Japan.
JUST Nagao produced is called as HIGONOKAMI in japan.
You know there are many imitation.
Sir. Motosuke Nagao is 4th generation of Kanekoma factory.

There are featured Higonokami regular products.  Please select from them.
  • S55C full steel  Eco model.       Suit for pupil, children, don't claim about quality.
  • Nickel silver case, SK steel laminated Silver bright case.     3 layer regular class.
  • Brass case, Blue steel #2 laminated Gold case.        3 layer hi-class. Well forged.
"
I choose the fancier version in the largest 120mm(tactical  :D ) version

I allready had a smaller one made by a different maker, in supposedly, lesser steel and quality(HITACHI YASUKI STEEL)

They are both in carbon steel.
My newer one apart from the difference in steel and handle metal has a secondary bevel.

Shown together with their packaging, which I have no idea what it says.

Here's my latest, a Case Sodbuster Jr in CV. The F&F are perfect, and the carbon steel takes one wicked edge. It's been in my pocket for the past three days, and has been my box opener, pallet unwrapper, stromboli cutting implement, etc. This is one great knife!

Had to get at least one nice and shiny pic, because this weekend I'm going to give forcing a patina a shot.

jerseydevil,

The CF Soddie Jr. will be in "As Ground" stainless......essentially brush finished Tru-Sharp stainless.

ALSO........Great Eastern is going to be producing a Soddie. They already did a short test run of a sorts on them. Here's a pic of those, these were done in Orange Delrin with O1 Tool Steel:

They are going to be doing a general production run identical to these but with Black Delrin scales, sometime in late February they are to be released. These are Sodbuster Jr. size.

Thanks, 2x! I'll have to keep my eyes open for both the Case and the GEC. Meanwhile......I was at the local hardware store today, where I've gotten a number of knives and tools. I deal with them all the time when I'm at work, and they always take care of me on prices. For $25 + tax I couldn't resist:

Case CV Trapper. This sucker is a lot bigger than I had thought! The red bone Case medium Trapper is dwarfed by it!

Ok, I finally got around to finishing off taking pics of a bunch of slippies I received since around Christmas time. This first one here is another big Case Classic similar to one I posted about over a month ago.......

It's a big #40 pattern Stockman at 4 3/8" closed. These were made by Queen Cutlery for this run of Case Classics. The scales on this are Smooth Honeybone....

This one was produced in in 1997 and is serial #0623.......

Blades are mirror polished 1095, swedged and sports a long pull master. Bolsters and shield are nickle/silver with brass liners and pins. Fit and finish is excellent.....

It came NIB with all it's original paperwork, I love these big serpentine stockmans and they are a favorite of mine from the original Case Classic run........

Next up is a minty Remington piece I got for a pretty good price.........

It's a Camillus-built Remington R103 Ranch Hand Bullet Knife from 1999. It's 3 1/2" closed Jack pattern with brush finished 440A stainless blades, nickle/silver bolsters and shield, brass liners and pins, and jigged Brown Delrin scales. Blades are swedged and the mainblade has a long pull, and both have nice sharp edges....

Fit and finish is real good and virtually seamless.........

And it's got some real stout backsprings which I like. It came mint in it's original box with all the proper paperwork.....

For me, another great addition to my Remington collection. And from back when they were made by the oldest Cutlery factory in the US.

Got another Jack knife here which I snagged around the same time as that Remington. This one a Queen........

It's a Queen Cutlery #69 pattern Staright Jack. It measures in at 3 1/2" closed and sports polished D2 Tool Steel blades, nickle/silver bolsters and shield, brass pins and liners, with Amber Carved Stag Bone scales......

One of the best looking handle materials they have used on their regular run items IMHO. Overall fit and finish is great. The knife is rock solid and virtually seamless throughout it's construction.....

Couldn't be happier with this one.  :2tu:
