And now for something completely different....
on: November 07, 2015, 11:45:13 PM
There have been many speSmurfpillsed multitools over the years. Ones for watch repair, ones for guns, ones for archery, even ones for gas chromatography, whatever that is. There's also been ones for the relaxing times too, such as the Victorinox Waiter, the Leatherman Flair, and even the humble Waiters Friend tool has helped people get in the party mood for many many years.

Opening a beer or decorking a bottle of wine are functions that have been covered by many multitools, particularly knife based, but they were never really equipped to handle the more creative party beverages.... until now!

Enter the Bar10der!

The Bar10der leaves the other offerings shaken and stirred, and promises to help you craft that perfect margarita, mojito, or Long Island Iced Tea. Armed with everything from jigger, juicer, muddler, strainer, and even tools to help produce those decorative citrus twists, this was something I absolutely had to try out!

As implied by the name there are 10 advertised functions:

Double Jigger: for measuring 1 oz and 1/2 oz shots
Reamer: for squeezing juice from citrus fruits
Muddler: for crushing fruits and mint leaves
4" non-locking knife blade: for that slice of lemon
Strainer: for holding back the ice after shaking
Stirrer: for the more delicate mixes
Channel knife: for decorative fruit twists
Zester: for hits of flavour
Bottle opener: for the beers and mixers
Corkscrew: for the wines

So how does it actually stack up? Well first of all this is a beast of a tool, yet quite impressive how much space this will save in your cocktail cabinet. While not wanting to go to the extent of calibrating the jigger, I was very eager to take this for a test drive.

The knife blade needed touching up, but I'd say it's not the worst edge I've ever seen on a multitool. The corkscrew has a slightly uneven start, but allowed easy access to a nice bottle of Chablis. The bottle opener also made light work of a bottle of Bombadier ale.

As for the cocktail tools, everything worked wonderfully. The reamer juiced a lemon that had been halved and sliced by the knife, whilst the zester and channel knife worked well on the rind. The jiggers did their bit too, and a White Lady was created. Fruit was muddled, and was strained along with the ice after shaking, in some rather pleasant experiment with vodka and gin. All in all the tool did everything it promised.

You may be looking at this thinking it is ridiculous, and you'd be quite right, ridiculous blended perfectly with brilliance. This is not a pocketable tool, and any barman turning up to his first day of work with this in his pocket would be laughed out of the establishment. But, if like me, you enjoy the odd creative libation, this tool is extremely useful and takes up little space in your cocktail cabinet. This tool is fun, and your friends (who may well already know your liking for Swiss Army Knives and pliers multitools) will be in hysterics as you rustle up something a little special for them.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have more testing to do....

Pro's:
It's utterly bonkers!
It has everything you need for cocktails aside from ingredients and a shaker.
It gets even more fun the more cocktails you have

Not quite, it lacks a cocktail masher :D, but it got the basics covered.

Had to look the white lady up... how is that with raw egg in it

Like most cocktails, the White Lady has many variations. The one I go for is gin, lemon juice, and cointreau (triple sec)

What, no Monty Python?  >:(

This looks like a fun little tool. Note that I wouldn't be saying that if I didn't think the tool is functional.

Useless "fun" things bring out :ashley: in me ::)

Thanks for the review  :salute:

PS: Cointreau... Great thing, that.

Thanks mate.  :tu: Once the knife blade had been touched up a little, I was very impressed with how this functioned actually. Aside from that, i got this tool for about £16. I bet if I went shopping for a juicer, zester, jigger, and everything else, the total probably wouldn't be far adrift.

I guess what I'm saying is that so far at least, this is no Wenger Business tool where the only reason to buy it instead of dedicated items is because you're a fan. This seems to do the job well enough without being extortionate, plus is actually functional and a genuine space saver

Yes, use it as a juicer in the folded position, then unfold it for tormenting the ingredients  :tu: :D

I really like that. Too bad I don't like cocktails. One measure of Chivas Regal, one measure of Drambuie (or Locha Nora, if I find it), neither shaken, nor stirred. You don't need a tool for that.

Do we really need to add cocktails to already epic levels of beer/cider consumption? Ok that was stupid, of course we do

Well, last time I stayed up till sunrise watching over a fire with half a tree on it so we didn't set the place on fire (after you courageously went to bed), then slept on the ground in the rain, in a non waterproof poncho, despite my tent with comfy sleeping bag and mattress only being 100ft away..... Yeah, I think cocktails would be the next sensible progression  >:D

Oh, forgot to mention in the review, the tool also comes with a little instruction booklet explaining the various tools. This also contains a number of different recipes at the back of the book  :tu:
