Walmart knife $3.87 kind of impressed.
on: November 10, 2015, 04:46:29 AM
I was at Walmart tonight and they have a bunch of Christmas stuff set up. A lot of knives including the Ozark Trails (Walmart brand) knife in a few varieties. Obviously these are normally junk, but figured I would try one out. One version caught my eye as it looks like a Kershaw. I picked the best one form what I could see through the clamshell and brought her home. To my surprise it was not even close to as bad as I had thought it would be. The blade locks up rock solid in all directions. That is probably the one thing that surprised me the most. The actual grind is very even. The edge is not sharpened to well as it is jagged and not done real well, but I can touch it up very easily and quickly so on a $3.87 knife it exceeded my expectations. The knife is almost perfect size and fits the hand well. Now for the bad. The bad is not even that bad really. The fake G-10 grips are very smooth and offer no grip at all. The blade deployment using the flipper isn't great, but does the job. That's it for the negatives. All in all its a good knife for a very low price.

Now don't hang me for this, but its to late to get any good pics and I will have to take some tomorrow or Wednesday. I might be able to get one right now just so you guys know what it looks like, but it won't be a good picture.

Forgot to mention some stuff. The lockup percentage is good. The blade centering is perfect.

Here are some pics.

Yup, just over $4.00 with tax. They had one that was camo handles and black blade as well that looked very similar.

I have been fiddling with it and cutting stuff all night and I am still impressed. I might give it a few swipes on the sharpmaker tomorrow and see how sharp we can get it. If the quality is the same on most of these then they would make great beaters, loaners, tackle box knife (will rust immediately), truck/car knife, whatever. Once I get paid I might drop $20 on five of these to give away to friends who always ask to use my knife. I just hope all the others are the same quality.

Any idea if it is at least 8Cr steel?

3Cr stuff is horrendous.

I saw this in a youtube video yesterday and like most people dismissed it, however the comments made in the video and the posts above look like you can occaisionaly come across a true bargin.

Dang, for under $4? At first it almost looks like a Gibbs knife.. I might have to get me one of those, is it a everyday price or just this week?

The issue with a lot of low cost knives isn't initial quality, it's longevity.  Years ago on KF I had a discussion with a guy that bought an inexpensive, cool looking tactical knife from a company that I have compared unfavorably to monkey feces in the past.  It too was great out of the box.  A week later though it failed catastrophically.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this one over time, so please keep updating us on how well it lasts.

Be careful, and make sure to count your fingers before and after each use.

What a potential bargain there and it looks pretty sweet from your pics. You have me wondering what the blade steel quality is. I'm excited to see how it holds up after some cutting tests.

Just a few quick responses before I head out. The longevity most likely is not there.

The blade steel is crap. You can tell by just looking at it.

I would not trust this knife to do any hard cutting tasks. It will strictly be thought of as a slip joint and only used for light cutting tasks as I do not trust it.

I love the look as well and that's what initially got my attention.

I have already gotten $4 use out of it so it's free and clear from here on out.  :D

It's got to have some crummy steel but I don't care for that price.

Unless its so bad its worth little more than a butter knife after some use.
For $4 you can get an Okapi here that will hold an edge

but they are always worth checking out; I would not have found Enlan if it wasn't for the same concept.

If that liner lock is acceptably strong, think about this:
- What would your opinion of this knife be if this was 1980?
- How would this knife perform against a budget folding knife from 1980?

I have a Puma folder from the 80's that is "better", but it was extremely expensive (for me).  Except for Okapis, everything cheap from that era had (chrome?) plated blades and couldn't hold an edge cutting smurf.....

If a time traveler brought me that knife I'd have been the coolest kid in school

I bought one of the Wal-Mart, Christmas time only, specials around 20 years ago.  A knife made in China, of unknown steel, with the name Bar Creek etched on the blade.  The knife is a conventional lockback as opposed to a liner lock.  It has a modified tanto point blade that holds an edge like nobody's business and was my EDC for years.  For a $5.00 knife I bought at Wal-Mart 20 years ago, it is decidedly well made, and is still in the rotation when I can remember what drawer it is in.  Sometimes you get lucky.

Useless without pics, I know.  I'll see if I can get some pictures later.

Absolutely there are deals to be had, and some cheap knives and tools are fantastic.

But, 20 years ago, $5 was a lot more money than it is now and people haven't yet begun to cheap out to the levels we see today.    :ahhh

Decent cheapos are fewer and farther between these days.  That doesn't mean they don't exist,  it just means they are that much better when you do find them.
