Charge TI - Has anyone ever had this issue before?
on: November 17, 2015, 10:44:30 PM
As I mentioned before in another section of this forum, I purchased at a bargain price, a (04/06) 2006 Charge TI selling at a local Flea market, very dirty and greasy when I got it but with perfect undamaged ti scales and tools. After taking it apart and giving it a detailed cleaning, I noticed inside of one of the handles, that the small, skinny/ flimsy, vertical tab that keeps the pliers from touching the other tools was broken, so now I must be careful folding and closing it otherwise the tip of the pliers will get caught/stuck between the driver bit and the can opener (see photo) making it hard to close, I don't want to force it so I need to close it nice and slow. The vertical tab on the other handle looks good. I'm very happy with my TI, specially with the price $ I paid, (probably because of the broken tab ), but this issue is not a big deal to me because I removed the driver bit and now it close very easy. I know LM fixed this problem few years ago by upgrading the tabs, so I decided to call and they want me to send it for repairs but not sure if they will fix it by replacing the inside liner with thicker an more solid tabs, like in the ones in the new TTI, Wave and Surge?.... I asked the LM representative but he's not sure and he couldn't give me straight answer.
Has anyone had this issue before with any of the multi-tools? Did you send it for repairs or kept it the way it is?
Well, I'm sure there's no procedure to be followed in order to close a Leatherman... unless one of the tabs breaks  ;)

Send it in and mark it sentimental if you want to get that one back.

I have had the same issue with my Wave in the past. I had no sentimental connection with it so they replaced it.

As Steve said if you mark the sentimental box they should only repair the original tool and not replace it. With that said they have been known for occasionally, accidentally replacing a sentimental tool.

They have been broken before, most send them in for repair.

I have broken them, some by mistake, some deliberately for modding.

I also open and close my MTs a certain way, because I'm special like that.

I remember those crummy old tabs. I was so glad when they fixed that.

Ever since my Wave tabs broke I started to close my MT's a certain way as well. Basically when I close the MT I position my index fingers on each handle and start to close the handles which wedges your fingers in between the pliers and handle and closes the pliers before they enter the handle and bypassing the tabs all together. I do this now for all my MT's. I assume your method might be similar if not the same.

It is yes. I'm still special though right? No need to answer that.  :P

Received email response from LM Warranty Group representative letting me know that if I decide to mail the tool they would not be able to repair that particular part since it's riveted to the inside housing, the only option would be to replace the whole housing which has the new thick/stronger tabs in it but unfortunately I'll be loosing the original one with the engraved manufactured date :(.....So I decided to pass on the repair and might as well keep it the way it is. Thanks everybody for  reading my post and all the comments.
