Problem with MiniMag Nite-Ize kit
on: November 21, 2015, 05:26:30 PM
Hello Flashlight Forum! I don't know if I've ever posted in here before. :o Anyways, I have several torches: I have two 3-cell Maglites - one red one green, two black AA incandescent MiniMags, and an XL50 (awesome light). In addition to my herd of Maglites, I also have a Leatherman Monarch 200 and 300 (the 300 is my work EDC for about 4 years now). I upgraded both 3-cells Mags with aftermarket LED kits and they've been awesome - brighter, whiter light and a better beam than stock, plus much greater battery life.

I also upgraded one of my incandescent MiniMags with the Nite-Ize LED and tail-switch kit. At first, I liked it well enough, and was actually pretty impressed with the improvement in performance. However, battery life did not seem to be improved at all. So after the first set of batteries died (Duracells) I put in some replacement copper-tops. But whenever I hit the tail-switch, the light would only come on momentarily. I can change the angle of the light in my hand and the light may come on, but changing angles again results in the light turning off again. By now, several months later, it barely will turn on at all. ???

I made the upgrade in the spring, I have not used the light in any bad conditions, and the light has not received any abuse.

Any suggestions or advice?

I did the same thing, the led, and switch, but after a while I ditched the tail switch, cause if you notice your leaving the flashlight on 24/7, the switch blinks using up the batteries, so I just put the old tail back on. I only use mine around the house for little jobs and it seems to do fine, but I also added a defensive bezel and must say it rocks!

I guess I should have asked, is the tail switch a very simple one or the I.Q. One?

I have read a lot of reviews of people complaining about these tail switches for Maglites not being very reliable. I am not sure what is going on, but it is no surprise given the track record of these.

Bummer. I really prefer the tail-switch versus the twist-on. Twist-on is honestly my only complaint with Maglite. So, if I switch back to the stock tail cap, I guess it is reasonable to assume it will start working again.

Yeah the tail click is nice on some other brands with a strike bezel, but a Maglite is known for their twists, unless the larger side clickers.

I would assume so.

You're right, and I never minded it before i knew there were tail-switches, but now it is aggravating to need two hands to turn on something so diminutive.

I will give it a shot when I get back home. I hope I still have the original tail-cap, I'm bad to throw things away.

I really don't need two hands to turn mine on, but I also keep a rubber cap/end on the bezel cause my strike bezel is sharp as hell..
