LM Signal mod
on: November 26, 2015, 03:39:06 AM
So I've seen and read the comments on the signal but I had to see for myself. After a few days with it I came to these conclusions

LIKES:
-Lighter than my MUT and easier to pocket carry
-like the hammer and full 1/4" bit holder in it
-Blade is nice and thick
-more capable than my Skeletool CX

DISLIKES:
-saw, haven't used one ever on a mt
-Whistle and file
-no scissors
-Awl

So in an effort to remedy the problem I started with the scissors,  I used the scissors from a Wingman just like what we did for the wave.

I plan on reshaping and sharpening the awl.

I also added a tweezers from a SAK. It is held in place by the scissors when closed and a snug fit when opened. To get them out i just have to tap the tool and they fall out.

Still trying to figure out what to do with the file and Whistle, maybe some kind of bit holder

I like this, you seem to have come to just the same conclusions as I did about the Signal. Please keep us updated on the progress!

Nice one.

Ever since it was shown for the first time everybody kept talking how much modding potential it had but was bad in its current state.

Glad someone finally took the plunge and started modding one to their requirements. :hatsoff:

I am working on my Signal this holiday weekend.
Step one, replace saw with scissors. There are so many things must be improve I don't know where to start.

I really feel like this is a Hammer focus MT, everything is designed and compromise around the hammer.
For those don't care about the hammer, should move on to a different MT.

May I ask what this grey thing I marked is? Looks a lot like plastic... (or is it part of the hammer?)

What I liked about this is the challenge, taking something and making it work for you.  Yes I agree thier are much better "survival" tools out there and I have a bunch of them all ready, this is just something to pass the time and see what I can come up with.

The awl is odd and bull, must be reprofile, but the thread hole on it makes it difficult to do.
Pliers handles are wide, I am not sure if I should grind down the handle or pliers stop.
Screw driver is awkward to use, not sure how to address that.

Maybe just replace the awl like from a rebar,  have to look at one again. I have only used the screwdriver once but I had the handles open like a screw gun and only turned a quarter turn at a time, wasn't to bad. As far as grinding down the plier stop,  mine close on the jaws so you would loose the serrations.  I did bevel the tip of them to look like the skeletool,  I don't like the looks of the flat tip.

It's been such a long time since I've visited MT.O, but the Signal caught my eye as a "super Skeletool" sort of thing.

After seeing this thread I had to get in on the scissor action :)

Thanks for the inspiration!

I dunno! I've been pretty lousy on all the forums recently. 3 kids and a new house will do that to you :)

I gotta say, after taking off all the yellow bits and adding the scissors, the Signal is starting to show it's hidden abilities...

This dude stacked the blade and saw on top of each other. Not sure why they couldn't share the top pivot. What tool's spot is the saw taking on that bottom pivot...the awl? Any of you Signal modders have thoughts on this one?

G'Day,

A question to the Signal Modders:

Will a Wave scissors fit inside the tool in place of the Awl? It is difficult to judge from the stock pictures and I don't have one...yet

Cheers,

Pete

Hm, I am not sure on that one.  It doesn't look like much could it there based on the size and shape of the spot.  Hopefully the pics will help you visualize.

Been away for a while,  just popped in to see whats new.

Monrogue,  how is it that the plastic piece on your file is red when al I've seen are yellow ones?

Haven't gotten back to any more mods on mine yet.

Does anyone know if the small tools from any other Leathermsn models can be swapped right in to the Signal with minimal  effort?

Thanks Mate,

The pictures do help.

Is there are physical reason that stops the inner tools from being swapped around? I think the scissors is longer than the screwdriver or awl, it is on the Charge. Maybe put the scissors where the bit driver is and move the bit driver towards the screwdriver and remove the awl? It is difficult to imagine without holding the tool.  ;)

Cheers,

Pete

Yeah I'm not sure   It may be possible.  I'm no expert on the inner tools on MTs as I haven't dabbled in that yet.  Here's another picture with the tools out.

I think you are right, it MAY be possible. Judging from where the scissors are on the Charge, one will have to move the bit holder over. The scissors thumb tab is off to the right if looked at the same angle as you opened the Signal so it cannot go where the awl is.

Thank you again for the pictures. I am going to see if I can have a quick look at it when I take a Leatherman in for a warranty repair next week.

Cheers,

Pete
