What hiking boots do you use?
on: November 29, 2015, 01:26:54 PM
What's on your feet when you go out and about?

I used to carry HAIX Airpower P9 Desert boots (German army issue).

But after developing bad, and I mean bad hotspots on my heel this summer during a two week plus hiking, mountaineering, camping, ... everything trip i decided to invest in some proper boots for that purpose.

Salewa MS Rapace GTX, couldn't be happier with them. Guaranteed blister free. Foot feels very solid in them. The have the Vibram sole and goretex membrane, very thick leather, reinforced heel and a climbing grip area in the toes section. Also compatible if I'd decide to go for something more serious in the winter time.

Yeah, I know, they need a good clean up.

I currently have some mid cut waterproof boots, Dunham Cloud.  Dunham is owned by New Balance I believe, and I was sent to their brand because I have short, very wide, Hobbit-like feet.  Some brands extra wide 4E is too narrow for me, but the Dunhams fit great.

I'm trying to add a pic, tapatalk's not cooperating at this moment.  I'll try again later.

Edit: Got the picture added :)

I wear this pair of Viking mountain boots in summer and on day hikes. The gore tex has been worn out, so I regularly wax them with nikwax to keep the water out. Very comfortable boots.

This pair of Viking Hunters I wear in winter when the snow is deep, and on more than one day hikes with a heavier pack that calls for more ankle support and dry feet.

There are a number of manufactures with small differences but you get the idea.

A lot of Soldiers buy boots from Nike and Reebok among others that are much more comfortable.

Last month I got myself some Keen Koven hiking boots:

http://www.keenfootwear.com/en-ca/product/shoes/men/koven-mid-wp-wide

They may not be the best looking boot out there but they are light, comfortable and waterproof, and most importantly they were 70% off.  And oddly enough, they were even in my size!  :D

i've a pair of meindl boots for the last 15 odd years - use them only for hillwalking and i do wax them 2 or 3 times a season - every year for the last 4 or 5 I've promised myself i'd replace them, but they insist on holding up ! They were expensive (for me) but i've gotten value bigtime.
I'd love to be able to get them resoled but even if i knew where i doubt it would be practical / cost effective.

La Sportiva - Makalu? - the previous owner had trashed them. An excellent boot and would buy again.

Nice ones, zoid.

The La Sportiva ones would fit my needs also I think.

I've been wearing these for almost a month now. They are my now go-to shoes for school, rain, and work.

They aren't high enough that I can still wear shorts.

They are darker than I wanted but BassPro had them for about 60 bucks in my size.

Had these Mammut Boots for a couple of years now and, despite some folks having problems with the soles, mine have been bulletproof.  http://www.gooutdoors.co....t-trail-gtx-boots-p133493

I was in the market for new boots and went to try some on.  I'd given myself a budget of no more than £100 or so and was thinking alone the lines of Brasher.  Tried on a load of boots and, while many of then were OK, none were just right.  I was then persuaded to try on the Mammuts and I didn't want to take them off.  The price tag was £50 more than I had been planning on spending however.  My wonderful wife gave me the go-ahead to break my budget and so I took them to the checkout and they rang up at £85!  No suggestion that they were on sale and the assistant hadn't said anything about it, so to this day I don't know if I just took advantage of a computer error or not.  I have however had warm, comfortable and dry feet ever since. :D

I got my tent like that, came to the register and it was something like 70% off. :woohoo: Last one. Have been using it for 9 years now and still love it.

Mammut is a good brand. Just got a winter jacket by them today. :D

Just re-checked a thread from a couple of years ago and I'd forgotten that Milhouse had suggested trying on the Mammut boots. All credit for my happy feet go to him.

I used to wear Danners, I forget the style. Something Military?

Anyway, after some knee trouble (unrelated to the boot) I now wear Salomon runners and waterproof socks.

Actually really good, and I wonder why I dragged heavy boots along so many trails and up mountains for years.

Started out with a pair of Salomon X Ultra Mid GTX boots, but they leaked like crazy after only a few months of use.

Salomon replaced under warranty with a pair of Salomon X Ultra Mid 2 GTX boots; much better and no leaks.

Will get a picture of my field boots when the sun comes up in the morning. I have some Altona Exo Speed II and I like them very much.

This has to be my 5th pair. Picked them up right before my last Afghanistan deployment.

Do you have any issues with the corners of the toe rubber coming off?

Not so far, but they haven't seen very extensive use yet. I only had one trip to the outdoors in the last few months, and then I just wore them on rainy days around town/to work.

Keep an eye out!

Mine are super comfortable. And extremely waterproof, even when puddles reach the laces.

But they are slowly getting worn in, then again I wear them everywhere. Through everything I can!

The design is a little different than yous but same concept.

I wore my Newton Ridge Columbia's and my Wellington Georgia Boots this last weekend on the hunt.

Both faired well. Some of the stands were a couple miles in. The Newton Ridges obviously felt better, however the Wellingtons  were a little more waterproof.

Got them both shined up with mink paste.

This summer I'd like to get some MUCK boots and Redwing Irish Setters. Try to grab some during a spring sale of some kind.

Especially appropriate when carrying a SAK. Didn't know Mammut was known outside of Switzerland, I usually use that brand to identify Swiss Tourists, when I'm abroad :D
