Quality Keychain magnet?
on: May 31, 2017, 12:50:11 AM
So I have been thinking about getting a magnet to either put on my keyring or keep in my belt pouch.
I am looking for a quality one that is preferably a steel or aluminum cylindrical housing with the magnet in the bottom with a keyring attachment so I can tie some paracord or something to it.

I don't know what pound pull I really need. It would be used for smaller stuff like picking up keys, multitools, etc.

Can anyone help me out?

I have checked amazon but only found the Chinese jewelry type magnets.

Thanks in advance.

What about a pill fob filled with neodymium magnets?  You can add or subtract the number of magnets to your desired strength.

That could possibly work. I'd still like to see what's out there though.

I purchased this 6 lb rare earth keychain magnet on eBay.  It is made in USA by Revolution Machines http://www.revolutionmachines.com/ .  I learned later that you can buy it for less than what I paid if you order directly from their web site.

The company sells similar keychain magnets of varying strengths, encased in brass, copper, or aluminum.    I opted for 6061 aluminum for light weight carry.

Here is the magnet I carry, shown with an old house key for size comparison purposes.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Can it still pick up things on the edges of the aluminum housing near the bottom or does it only pick up things on the very bottom?

This is the one I'm thinking of.

And it won't be carried on my keyring but in my belt pouch with my Swisstool and Knipex pliers so I'm not worried about it being slightly bigger.

It will pick up from the side, but the bottom has much stronger attraction.
