Anyone dealing with Hearing loss/tinnitus

Well just like the subject says, I was just wondering, cause I've had a continues ring for like 20yrs, think I might go get a test done, cause I did a few online tests and the results weren't to great, every time I'm with friends I have trouble keeping up with the conversations, that and some of the people if they don't look right at me forget it! I did take a test a while back, they shoved me in a insulated phone booth and said I was still good yet couldn't hear half the tones going off, so I was just wondering if anyone knows anything on this subject?

I really don't know anything on the subject, but many years of having stupid loud stereo systems in my cars has left me with occasional ringing, and lessened hearing, but not all the time.   It hasn't gotten to a point that I think I need to go for testing though.

I've also smartened up and started wearing hearing protection when working with loud things.  As much as I still love stupid loud systems, I haven't had one for many years.  It's too bad we couldn't tell our younger selves to smarten the hell up!! lol

My left ear is pretty much shot.  I've got a constant ringing, and the hearing kinda fades at times.  I've really got to have it checked out, but between my leg and the new teeth I'm getting, it's near the bottom of the list.  Getting old sucks, doesn't it JR?

Yup.

Can't hear a lot, and often what I do hear is not even close to what people say.  I don't have a hope in hell of making out much of a conversation if there's a lot of background noise.

I never was one of those people that played their music loudly but I did get to enjoy an ear infection when I was in high school since I'm allergic to penicillin.

Then later in life I worked a lot of bars with industrial strength sound systems and that probably didn't help.

Mental problems since 3, bad back since 16, bad hearing since like 20, from gunfire and of course those LOUD stereo car systems, yeah Derek, I had me one of those heavy bass kicking cars, but yeah getting old, in some ways definetly feeling it JD, with the bad back, hearing, arthritis, but were only 36, we haven't even hit 40!

My left ear is fried as well...hunting accident. A friend, standing 6ft to my left, shot at a deer without making sure everyone was behind the muzzle, I was about even with it. The concussive blast of his .270 Win knocked me into the jeep. My ears have rung ever since and I lost about 40% of the hearing in my left one. It's worse when I'm tired or sick. There is an over the counter supplement but I haven't tried it.

I hear you Grant(since you typed it) but when two or more people start talking I can't keep up, ESPECIALLY if background music is on or other talking forget it! I'll only keep up with who's closer or louder, or that perfect bitch, I mean pitch like my wife!! lol

I do a bit as a result of firing an old shotgun some decades ago, and have worn hearing protection when shooting since.
Newer guns are a lot more quiet I find, but I still use valve type earplugs when hunting.
I got tested, for no reason, last year just to verify that. Nothing can be done, but it is not a huge problem as according to the tests i have super hearing in the rest of the sound spectrum

MP, I have suffered from tinnitus for several years.  There was a period during which I though I was going to lose my mind (something that small would be hard to find).  But the brain accommodates these things over time, and I am only aware of it from time to time.  I just try to ignore it, though its not easy when you hear a band saw inside your head 24/7.

What fun would life be without adversity?  Lots of fun, that's what.

I've had tinnitus in my right ear since I was 21, I barely notice it now, perhaps if I have a head cold. I'm 45 now and it's the arthritis that's really slowing me down.

I have tinnitus and my family is getting sick of me not having it treated supposedly they have made a new years resolution for me to go back to the doctor and have it addressed. years of working in the oil field shooting guns dirt bikes loud music, I'm 42 now and they've been complaining over the last 6-7 Year's

Look up Obscure Auditory Dysfunction. I have it and my hearing, on paper at least, is good. But if more than one person is talking to me or its an environment that has lots of competing noise I can be effectively deaf.

I always have a constant wine in my ears too.

That's called selective hearing, normally it's the women that have that! My grandfather tought me about it waaaaay back, as we walked side by side in a Sears store with my grandmother about 20' in front of us, he said watch, he said something trying to get her attention but something she could care less of, nothing, then he elbowed me and said something else that would piss her off, and at the same tone, she turned around and started waving her finger yapping it up! lol..

I've had my fair share of loud noises, once I was inflating my bikes tire and thought it was leaking air so I put my head down to listen and the tire blew off the rim with my head right next to it, needless to say I couldn't hear for a while, another time I was at a airforce base doing ductwork, I was inside one of the ducts sealing it up while a jet was on take off, idk what he did but (((bang))) I came down the ladder as everyone looked at me all I saw were jaws moving, and then of course all the shotgun, rifles, and handguns with no earplugs. Or the loud tools on the jobs, so yeah all that could have play on this continuous ring.. The wife's going to look and see if she can make an appointment next week,

Guys, reading all this and knowing you're all in your 30's -40's...wow...I don't feel so bad.

Between guns, music (yes I saw Cream. the Stones and the BeachBoys from 10ft away many years ago), and helicopters during fires/rescues in my youth, all without any ear protection, I've always thought I was somewhat deaf.  In a crowded restaurant or loud bar, I don't even try joining a conversation as I can't decipher a thing.

If you guys are going through this now...you're in trouble!  So get help now or figure out your workaround.

I jokingly blame it on the Iron Maiden/Twisted Sister concert in Halifax NS back in 84, but I really don't know what caused it.

I've had tests done and have been told that the bottom end of my hearing is going.
The ringing is constant and maddening.

The only real peace I get is at night, as my wife's CPAP machine acts as a white noise generator and drowns out the ringing.

I did everything wrong, from concerts to nightclubs to car stereo loud enough to affect balance.....in several of my cars.
Too much shooting with either no hearing protection or just some TP wadded up and stuck in my ear.

Want to hear the "bad" news?  Tinnitus just about went away after I quit smoking.
Flabdominals were turned into abdominals with many many sit-ups and some basic yoga.......end of lower back pain.

If I only knew and used the knowledge 10 years ago, I would be a machine of a 40-year old today.....

I wish I'd been at that show.  Micah and I saw Maiden in '90 at the Metro Center with Anthrax.  Never seen Twisted Sister live, but I'd love to someday.

Oh yes. I have had had luck with getting blown up and many years of shooting. Both ear drums have been perforated at least once.

Ears ring all the time and pretty much deaf in one ear and not much better in the other.

I have hearing aides and it helps with hearing people talk a ton. The added bonus is often the ringing will go away. The doctor said it is normal for the ringing to stop when you have the hearing aides in.

My hearing isn't great, particularly when there's background noise. 25 years working in engineering, rock concerts, loud music in headphones, and a couple of nasty ear infections when younger. I got a little too close to a supposedly controlled explosion with some pyrotechnics once too

What? huh? What's that ringing noise going on?        I have hearing loss and ringing in the ears and have had since my early 20's. Like others to much shooting, loud music tractors and drilling rigs. I was a derrick hand working for Pioneer Drilling when I found out my hearing had been affected. I was 23 or 24 and started wearing ear plugs on the drilling rig the old timers laughed at me but 35 years later I still have some hearing left. I've lived with ringing for so long it dont notice it much any more.

Funny to read this here!  Actually, the reason why I started collection SAK's is... Tinnitus!!
It started about 5 years ago (42 now), and it got me quite depressed at that time. Visited some experts/doctors but in the end, it can't be cured (most cases anyway), so I just had to learn to live with it.  To try to focus on something else, I started to visit a local flea market, and there I found this guy who bought all the confiscated airport knives at that time and sold them for 2-4 euro. After I bought one, he said: you'll be a collector soon! No way, I said. Got about 600 now...   
So, now I want to sell some stuff and I was looking for this post I once read about shipping (sort of tips & tricks), and I stumbled upon this thread here. About the tinnitus, I still have it (sometimes hyperacusis too) and sometimes it still bothers me when it's silent, so at night when I want to fall asleep, I just ask myself: "what is my most favourite SAK?" and I fall asleep within 1 minute :-)
Btw, anyone knows that shipping thread?

I've kinda grown used to it, it just kinda sucks having to ask everyone to repeat what they said, huh? I have an appointment next week with some speSmurfpillst down the street, maybe they will be a little better then the one I went to like 10yrs ago in a Walmart, who threw me in an insulated box, made me hit buttons if I heard anything then tell me you seem to have a little loss, but your good!
