A suitable SAK
on: August 24, 2008, 11:08:00 PM
Hi folks,

I am looking for a SAK or similar tool which would need to have the following features. There's models with these features and loads more besides, but I prefer the basics as it's for pocket carry and I want to go lean.

The three essential things are, scissors, plain blade (around 2-3") and a corkscrew.

Sorry if this is a very daft question to anyone in the know, but I am finding pages and pages of tools when I search and it's difficult to pinpoint the nearest one.

Cheers,

Mark

I think a Compact would be a good option.  :)

That looks the business, thanks Benner. I wonder would it be the most minimal SAK with the three items I'm after?

Out of the current line up I believe so.

There was a discontinued Golfer model that didn't have the hook, but with those tools you aren't going to get a sak slimmer than 2 layers so you can call the hook on the Compact as a "freeby" as it doesn't take up any more space.
I'm back!!

Thank you, Benner!

I'll order one up tonight. I don't hang around when I'm in the notion - this is not always a great way to operate but it hasn't failed me yet :drink:

Cheers again,

Mark

There is the Climber, too, if you felt like it.

It would indeed.  The Compact is two layers, which is what you'd need to have, as both the main blade and scissors are both "full length" type tools.  The main blade is designed to have another tool in the same layer, usually a small blade as on the Climber, but occasionally the combo tool (as on the Compact), or a pruner blade, electrician's blade or nail file, as featured on various models.  Two layers is the absolute minimum if you want both scissors and a blade.

Welcome to the forums! You can't go wrong with the Compact,I think it's the best"urban" EDC going.

I agree that the Golfer is an 84 mm beauty.

You can find used ones for $15 and mint condition ones for $65.

If you want a Compact that can tell you what time it is,  there's the Timekeeper.
That's a Compact with an analog watch on one of the scales.
Out of production, but readily available.

I think the Compact would make a great carry for someone who doesn't want too much, essentially the only thing it doesn't have that the climber does is an Awl, but it makes up for it with some other neat tricks.

I've never had a Compact but I often carry a Climber . It fights for pocket space with Benners Wenger SI  :D

Considering that Climbers tend to be cheaper then Compacts (why? ), only a true minimalist would go for the compact. On th eother hand, Compacts come with the plus scales, and the hook is perfect for holding that skinny pen... The only way to decide is to buy and EDC both of them!  :D

One option that I always recommend is buying used from Tim (Felinevet):

Now, buying new from Tim is also highly recommended. But his used selections are quite good and very affordable alternatives to buying new. Especially if you want to by more than one model and are on a tight budget. Generally  what I have done to the used models I have purchased is a quick touch-up of the blades a really thorough cleaning and putting in a new toothpick (which he also sells). On one Mechanic I put on new scales I bought from his son Tom (Rotokid):

Good luck with your search, and welcome!

I think I need to find a Compact.

The Waiter is GRAND, but maybe just not function-filled enough,
A Compact would give me a few of the extra features of the  :climber: (Scissors & Hook), but not move me into having the Cap Lifter, Can opener & Awl, which I already have on Soldier  (yes it has the Combotool, but that is a function overlap, not an actual tool overlap, so that has to be less undesirable I think)

And with that combo, I think I could get away without carrying a dedicated folder, because the Soldier blade is fierce enough for most any cutting foe.

I LOVE THIS KEYBOARD.

I came to work today specifically so I could use my beautiful computer with it's big screen, fast internet, and dreamy touch-type keyboard of PURE, sensual, typing ecstasy.

The Compact is a great SAK and is a regular in my EDC line-up.  I think the Combo tool is a better bottle opener than the proper one.   :pommel:
