Nxt Handle Splay
on: May 18, 2022, 08:50:40 PM
A few years back, someone mentioned reducing handle splay a on a Gerber NXT,  but I didn't quite get how they did it.  Anyone ever do this, and if so, would you mind explaining how and with a few pics?  Thanks.......

You can file down the tabs that the plier head pushes against when open.  Getting the plier head out is difficult though without stripping the screws.

Thanks Juan.......your original post is what prompted this post.  However, the way my brain functions, I'd do better with a pic or two.  Could you possibly do that?  Thanks very much.

Ok tonyg, here it is and, hope it helps; at the pliers stop, draw a .5-1.5mm line across it on both sides of the pliers (I'm using the one I did as an example; you can see where the original stop was ground; mines were 1mm).

Now, using your rotary tool, grind away up to the line you made. I first cut with the carbide tip and finished off with the stone.   [ Invalid Attachment ]    [ Invalid Attachment ]

Once satisfied with the work, clean with compressed air. If, like me, you don't like the shinyness, you can place a drop of muriatic acid/ hydrogen peroxide mixture (1:2) to the area until etched; clean with a dilution of baking soda, rinse with plain water, dry, and lube. You should end up with something like this middle one, as compared with MP600 on its left and, Wave on its right):

It will also open and close with a factory-like snap, and will not open by itself.

Here's a picture of the bit I used for cutting the stop:

And please, don't mind the knackered pivots, as it was used at one time as a parts tool donating its scissors, awl, and combo tool to other MP's (but it is now all back to itself!, and used around the house). Hope yours do fine, and to see pictures soon because...
