Fallkniven Alox
on: May 10, 2016, 02:44:25 AM
Just noticed Fallkniven has an alox slipjoint.  3G steel blade and a few different colors of anodized aluminum scales.  Interestingly to me the blade has a nail nick on both sides.

They look pretty and nice...
On the official website they run at over 80$ though but if they are as good as their fixed-blades they might be worth it.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Wut? 80$ for a single blade folder? Nope, nothing I'd be interested to acquire, I'm too spoilt by Victorinox quality  The handle seems interesting, the blade shape not so much.

I like their marketing approach, though: there's nothing special about this knife feature-wise so you can use it almost anywhere :D

I agree firiki, it's a bit meh really - certainly doesn't warrant 80 bucks. Even the nice box is wasteful - what do you do with it once you're edc'ing the knife? Could turn it into the worlds most inconvenient belt pouch.

that is very nice although the price is a bit high. but when you look at some of the offerings from GEC and other traditional folder companies perhaps it makes sense

Don't be daft, magentus. The box wasn't meant to be the world's most inconvenient belt pouch, it's just the cradle you're supposed to allow the little knife to sleep in  :salute:

My only gripe is that FALLKNIVEN isn't a traditional folder company so I get the feeling they're trying to cash in their reputation with a seemingly indifferent product. I haven't had any experience with their famous laminated powder steel G3, though, so I have no idea how good it is. In case it is any good the price could be justified (somewhat, as I still think it's too much but that's just me).

It's not just you. Fallkniven is a good company but sometimes they do make odd decisions, at least to me

Maybe they accidently ordered 150,000 little wooden boxes, couldn't return them, so made a knife that not only fitted neatly into the box, but was pricey enough to recoup the cost of the original mistake.

That's what I would do anyway.

I spent a few hundred on the big fixed blade and it's Fricken awesome so 80 on a small folder with awesome steel is about right to me.  I think they made it plain looking to be not at all tactical and that fits with the legal to carry name.

The only con I see is the smooth alox will likely wear quickly.

Ive got the A1 and F1.  Covers my fixed blade needs just fine never felt the urge to buy more.  Ive been a big Fallkniven fan since I discovered the brand.

At the time I tried some big name US brands like ESEE and didnt like them.  Not a fan of non stainless coated steels.

It was designed for the knives-back-on-planes TSA initiative that almost took effect a couple of years ago, IIRC, just like the Spyderco Roadie. Presumably it made more sense to go to market than to shelve the design.

Their 3G steel is excellent, so this is like a super-upmarket Bantam…

I always liked the F1, for its simple elegance, good ergonomics, and steel. Now, a folding F1... would like to play with it.

Fallkniven makes a nice knife. I've a couple folders and a fixed blade.

But to me, they went a bit too far with the legal to carry. This model is just barely over 3" closed.

Little too small for my tastes. But perhaps in the EU market, it would be better suited. Dunno.

Fallkniven pricing has always been a tad on the high side.
