Tons of questions and observations, will wait till the 18th to be totally safe.

The movie starts with one of the coolest shots and simple "opening scrawls" of them all.
A First Order ship blacking out the view.

The main "good" characters are awesome and so is Kylo Ren.
In fact all of them are perfect, Hux is a wet blanket.

I feel the whole movie sets the scene for the rest of the trilogy and seems almost empty on its own.
But they there are some epic battles and I can see its just me wanting more

Ok protected by the spoiler tags.

What I really liked
Show content
No silly sports commentators, Jar Jars or Ewoks.
Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren are all really good; the motion capture characters are great, Maz Kanata and Snoke.
Really good movie.

Discussion points and spoilers
Show content
Rey using the force with no training, makes a storm-trooper release her with Jedi Mind Control.
She may have been doing this all along, takes BB-8 from another scrap collector; might have stumbled on the mind control before and been using it for long on Jakku.
The voice over in the trailer does not exist (force, father has it, me, sister) , neither does a shot of Maz handing the lightsaber to a female.
It seems that the leaked script was modified to make the lightsaber irrelevant; think it was going to be the main plot device. A plot synopsis leaked in May seems 90% accurate.
Nothing on the knights of Ren; vision scene needs to be looked at many times.
Massive death and development of the bad guy. Kylo Ren is one messed up dude.
Good funny bits with the two storm troopers, drop your weapon and a few others.
Phasma is irrelevant in this one; how could they release a figurine with such a non event. Expecting her to feature bigger later on.
How much was Mark Hammil paid for this one?

What I did not like
Show content
Very little not to like
More questions than answers but if you look at it as part one of three it should all come together later

Here is, and I'm not kidding, one heck of a spoiler.  Seriously don't read until you've seen the film.

I can't believe they killed Han.  Once it was set up on the walkway I knew it was coming, but given the huge amount of screen time he had I thought he'd go on to be part of the rest of the series.  Might he be brought back?  I very much doubt it. :-\

I knew someone was going to die.  When Han and Chewie split up I knew it was going to be one of them.

What I didn't get was why, when the Falcon landed  did Chewie just walk right past Leia?  I'd think given their history and the fact that they had both just list the person they were closest to that they would at least acknowledge each other.   Instead Chewie follows the injured Finn, someone he just met a few days earlier.

One thing that bothers me is this; why does it need to be a "Resistance" fighting the baddies?  Does the New Republic not have armed forces?  Who are the First Order that it falls to a ragtag group of fighters to deal with them and how come they in a position to feel angry at the Senate for supporting the Resistance?

If I've missed something please enlighten me.

Yep! It's a pity no one wrote some books to fill the gap between the end of Jedi and here....oh wait! They did and then it didn't happen

I wondered the same thing.

I think the New Republic, at least in this version, and ignoring the Expanded Universe we all knew and loved the past 30 years (yes, it's painful for me too....) doesn't actually have a force of their own, similar to the Old Republic, but instead probably depends on member systems' forces, similar to the UN.

The New Order is probably more like the Imperial Remnant which kept reducing in size without decent leadership.  In the Expanded Universe Thrawn managed to rebuild the Empire significantly.  Toss in a couple of Dark Jedi/Sith Lords and they could theoretically rise to a significant level of power again.

That's as plausible a take on it as any. :tu:  I have to admit I've not read any of the books in twenty years or more, but I do recall Thrawn.

Other than Lando the one other character I'd like to see back is Wedge Antilles.  Dennis Lawson is still very much alive and kicking and acting on stage and screen.

I knew something had been botterhing me, it was the books, a long time since I read them as well. I guess Disney, at the moment have tolerated them, but are ignoring them. Here's hoping it stays that way.

When Finn was on the ground and saved by X Wings you hear him say "wow, that's a great pilot!"

I totally expected to see Wedge.

Can't tell you how odd it is to have someone from the other side of the world quoting an article from the Courier (my local paper) at me. :D  In my defence I don't often read it.

At least they thought it was a good idea as well and made the offer, but if he doesn't want to do it then that's up to him. :)

When my family was alive, I used to get local UK papers sent to me to read here.

I'm not sure if the news was any better, but I liked having a paper the size of the dining table.
