There are a lot of really odd things in SAKdom:

- the lack of 84mm models with scissors
- the scarcity of Wenger 85mms with any sort of inline phillips
- the absence of any 91mm model with a nail file

Blades, nail files, openers with flathead & philips drivers, scissors, and corkscrews. These are pretty common SAK tools, yet you can't get them all on any one model currently in production.

The only model that comes to mind with those tools was the Alumnus which is very hard to find. Now that seems very strange to me...  ???

I think Mr. Elsener should hire a few Americans to design some of their SAKs.

The Swiss, bless their hearts, are different from everybody else.  I suppose it's that difference that made them make something so awesome as the SAKs, but, they've got great American competition from Leatherman.  They need to address some of the needs for basic work tools, like the ones everybody listed in this thread.

Yeah, but after your work modding that Alox SAK, removing layers from one of those large SAK will be a piece of cake for you. :D

In all honesty, I don't see a real competition here. Anyone who gets their tool wet (sleep soundly tonight, MT.O) knows Leathermans rust quickly as hell. With all Jew respect to the company, their products are not meant for down-to-earth grit.

The Super Tinker is my ideal knife, or the Salesman which is more or less the same in 84mm.  However I compromise with a Compact for lightness of carry although I am not a great lover of the Combo tool.

In the interests of research into minimalism I have been carrying a 91mm Waiter plus lately. So far it has worked out well with a keyring Classic for the scissor tool.

Blade PE
Scissors
Pliers
Inline Phillips
Flat screwdriver

Unfortunately there are no Vics or Wengers that will satisfy the above needs.  Seems a bit odd to me. :(

The Wenger S-557 has all of those and just a little more (wrench, openers, nailfile, awl, corkscrew).

My "must haves" change with what I am doing on the day; is it an average day in the city? Or a walk in the woods?

City "musts";
main blade
scissors
bottle opener
corkscrew to hold mini-driver.

In other words, a Compact

Countryside "musts"
main blade
small blade
saw
back mounted philips as it is a bit more comfy to hold.

My Hiker fits the bill at the moment.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.
