Fieldmaster: Questions on the wood saw
on: August 26, 2008, 04:41:22 PM
I saw a Vic Fieldmaster, which is the same thing as my Super Tinker but with a saw. It got me thinking. A saw might be nice, but I have some questions on it:

1. Has anyone sharpened the wee little thing, and how difficult is it (assume that I'm all thumbs with tools)

2. I understand it's an "emergency use" kind of tool, but how well does the saw work?

If I get a Fieldmaster, I'll have to justify the addition of  saw. I really can’t recall ever needing the use of a saw. Quick, someone give me an excuse! :D

You never know when you'll have to saw some small branches for splints.

I doubt you'll ever have to sharpen it--they stay sharp for a LONG time.  If you need to sharpen one, a small jeweler's file will do the trick.  I've sharpened up some well-used ones this way with no problem.

It works well on wood, PVC and as a sheetrock saw in a pinch.  If you ever get your arm trapped and have to saw it off, you'll be glad to have it!  ;)

Yeah, I highly doubt you'll ever dull the saw!

It really depends on your particular situation. For instance, if you live in Manhattan, probably no need for a saw. However, if for instance you live in the woods as I do on 6 1/2 acres, I can say from experience the saw comes in very handy. And as others have said, these saws stay sharp a very long time.

The saw on my Camper is a tad smaller than on the locking blade models, but I wouldn't call it "emergency use only" either. Granted the knife may not stand up to abuse as well as a fixed saw would. Still, I'll vouch for Victorinox saws any day.

I have a Fieldmaster, I love it. The saw comes in handy quite a bit. From cutting branches to PVC pipe. It doesn't take up a lot of space so why not.

That's a good point, DTH.  The saw layer is one of the thinnest layers available on a SAK.

I think it's interesting that people always think of the saw in relation to outdoor activities. As an electrician and entertainment technician, a small saw blade is always coming in handy for cutting an outlet hole, cutting trim and small board stock, general carpentry work, drywall, PVC pipe, and so on. Even though I live a very urban life, the saws on my tools still see a surprising amount of work.

After about 25 years of occasional use, the saw still cuts like it was new.

How well does it work?

Thanks for the responses so far. Good food for thought. Def, I read the wood saw article on SOSAK… great read! I'm bookmarking SOSAK.

The local stores don’t have a Fieldmaster, so I can’t check one before I buy it. They do have a Camper, so maybe I'll give it a look just to see what the saw is like. Camper looks like a nice little knife…though for me it needs a phillips instead of a corskcrew.

Thanks to this board, I'm finding myself tempted to get more SAKS. Curses! :D

Felinevet(Tim) can fix you up with a Fieldmaster at a good price...many people here can attest to that.If you want something the size of the Camper but with Phillips, the Hiker is the way to go.
