jlwatso1's 31 Day SOG Super Power Badge Quest
on: January 01, 2016, 03:52:01 PM
Day 1 - Happy New Year!
Well... I originally purchased this Powerlock to use as spair parts for my Paladin PT-540, but couldn't pass up this challenge. So I could change my mind after this challenge, but until further notice, this guy's name is "Dead Man Walking".

1st pic is of Dead Man Walking getting to know the rest of my EDC Crew.

2nd pic is of Surge HVAC Pro laid up in bed. He is recovering from a nose job and tool amputation and sequential transplant. He has a month to rest up!

Did you adapt a ratchet into your Surge?!?! Hopefully the rhinoplasty is successful.

Yup! Wish I could have fit a ratchet with a reversing lever, but I ran into space issues. Have to flip it over to reverse. Bits slide through, so an extension is needed. The ratchet fits in the bit adapter. I could use a reversible ratchet if I wanted to remove it every time.

Got some fans installed today with the help of Dead Man Walking, a couple of Klein screwdrivers, and wire strippers.

Here are a few more pics. Turned out nicely. I'm still getting use to the tool covers on this guy... Had one pop off a couple of times already, but I will say I do like having a dedicated Phillips driver. I can see why a few of the other Leatherman guys have put one on your SURGE's.

DAY 2

Didn't need all of my EDC gear today, so I just carried Dead Man Walking and his bit kit in the Powerlock sheath supplied with the tool upon purchase. It is big enough to accommodate the tool and bit kit, but it was a little hard to pull the Powerlock out. The wife and I are watching the Dallas Mavericks vs. the New Orleans Pelicans at the American Airlines Center tonight, so I guess he will have to guard the car while we're inside. Not a real big sports fan but I thought I would set this pic up do you guys.

Cool pics!

Thanks! Hopefully they will get more interesting once the work week starts. I plan to run this tool through its paces and see how it stands up to my Surge. It's got big shoes to fill. :multi:

Yeah it does! I think you have one of the best perspectives coming into this. Not dogging anyone else, I just like that your going from a Full Size LM to a Full Size SOG.

Love my Surge! I will give it to SOG though they have a part of the multitool market that Leatherman has yet to capitalize on when it comes to allowing the customer to customize a tool for their needs.

DAY 3

Church Carry
I don't normally carry a full sized multi to church, but in the spirit of the challenge, I will be doing a little Powerlock Pocket Carry.

DAY 4

Rise and shine! 4:20am comes early...

My brother-in-law saw my EDC gear that I belt carry and decided I needed a new belt for Christmas! I'm pretty pumped! This thing is SWEET! :tu:

Those 5.11 belts are awesome! Super stiff. You could easily carry quite a few  CCWs without It folding, let alone a MultiTool!

Started cutting copper this morning for a VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) setup. Deadmun (I have taken to calling him this as Dead Man Walking is a mouth full) just hung out until I started putting Armaflex (insulation) on the copper. I miss my outside opening blade... It takes a while to deploy the knife. The comfort grips hide the tools, so you can't tell which cover the knife is under. Both covers popped off before 8 am. I put one back on to differentiate which side the glad was under.

Used the needle nose to ream/woller out some copper and allow me to insert a copper line before braising. I like that it is more rounded than the head on Leatherman Surge. Haveing second thoughts about the nose job performed on my Surge. Forgot I used it for this. Oh yah, as I was reaming copper out, the other comfort grip/ tool cover slid up and was subsequently removed.

It's nice to see someone using their tool, mine's been doing minimal work these last couple of days. But how are those covers attached? They seem to come loose all the time!

I don't know if yours is different, but on my unmodified powerlock the knife blade and scissors are in the grip with the lettering.

You're correct they are in the one with the lettering.

There are just some notches in the tool. I think I would have to pop rivet them on if I wanted to keep them on a rough as I am on this thing...

i had similar issues with my Powerlock. I just tossed the handle covers, they were more annoying than they were worth.

So it looks like it is going to be a long month... I was looking at my Powerlock and saw that the clip/retainer is missing from the bit adapter! The only time I have used it was to see if some bits from my socket set would work on it to replace my car battery a couple days ago, but I didn't have the right adapter. Guess it must have come off then. I will send it in for warranty after the challenge is over.
