Five Minute Walking Stick Wrap
on: January 05, 2016, 09:32:06 PM
I use a walking stick quite often in the summer, most of the time while I'm wading the rivers on my almost daily pursuit of pacific salmon.  River currents can be very deceiving and I've found a walking stick is a lifesaver in those swift currents rushing over slippery rocks.

Here's my quick five minute KISS para cord wrap for a walking stick.

I started off with a nice piece of birch that was sitting in my garage that I cut and stripped a few months ago.  I put a quick stain on it the other day for a different look, without stain the wood was almost white. I'm not sure about the hardness of birch wood but I've been using a birch walking stick for a couple seasons and its held up great.

The first step is to lay the cord out and tape it in position.

Second, start wrapping making sure to keep the cord tight and adjusting the cord underneath as necessary to keep it in a straight line.

After the first few wraps, the lower piece of tape can be discarded.

Once you have it wrapped up to the upper tape, remove it.

Wrap all the way up to nearly the top of the cord, leave just enough to feed the cord through the loop.  Make sure to keep the cord tight.

Grab your Leatherman and pull the cord at the bottom of the wrap to tighten the loop at the top cinching the loop at the top closed.

Next I fed the cord through the hole I drilled and tied a simple overhand knot.

After pulling the cord from the bottom again to make sure I got it good and tight, I trimmed the cord and melted the ends as pictured.

Well that's pretty much it.  A quick, simple and clean para cord wrap.

Excellent work.  I too am a big fan of walking sticks when out on the trails. It's never a bad idea to have an extra point of contact or cordage  :tu:

Nice work! I believe pouring boiling water over it will make the cord shrink somewhat, and tighten up so it doesn't start shifting over time

One of the rivers that I fish often is extremely muddy.  I jam that walking stick in the mud and use the carabiner to hold my stringer of fish. Works out great for me, many other people just tie their stringers around their waist or leg.

That makes sense. I'm really hanging out for fishing mission. Might try and sneak out tonight for a couple hours.   :ninja:

Thanks gents :salute:

Also, I forgot to mention that I started off with about 20 feet of cord for that wrap.

And that wrap gives you a supply of cordage for emergencies - arm sling, trauma dressing, wound closure, etc.  I'm not a big fan of paracord bracelets, but you have a practical usage for the paracord in addition to any emergency usage.

Absolutely!  Not a big fan of bracelets either but I really like to have the cord at my disposal.  I've used paracord several times while out camping/fishing, usually just for tying up tarps for rain/windbreaks or for stringing between a couple trees to hang my waders to dry. Luckily, I haven't had to use any for first aid but it's there if the need arises.

Nice job! :tu:

I did the same on my walking stick, but I put a few things on the stick(zip ties, razor blade, fishing line, and a few other things) then wrapped over them, you'd never know their there, except the zip ties that show at the top.. I also made one of those rock fling things as a wrist  rest.

Thanks guys!

Here's the final product after the cord was allowed to dry overnight.  I had it wrapped up pretty tight in the first place but that hot water sure did have an effect. This grip is solid, probably won't be able to tell from the picture though.

Yeah, I love walking sticks and canes. I can't seem to stop adding the odd one here and there whenever I stumble upon a new one.

I can only imagine how much worse it would be if I made my own.

I'm not one bit surprised that you collect walking sticks too. :D :tu:  Making your own could be a new hobby for you.  I've thought about it...  I could make a bunch over the winter time and when fishing season hits, take them down to the Russian River and sell them for $20 a pop!  Shoot, maybe I could slap a "Made in Alaska" sticker on them and charge extra.
