PST, PST II Owners Club
on: January 07, 2016, 12:24:50 AM
Well, I can't believe we don't have a club for the original so we'll remedy that here. Let's see those iconic original PST and PST II's  :tu:

I'll get us started.

Here is my original PST bought back in 1994

And my PST II

Rather ironic that this club is created the same day that someone else takes possession of my PST II that I owned for a couple of years   :P

I'll post pics later, but I'll happily admit to owning a BO PST and a lightly modified PST II.  A multitool that everyone should own IMO.

Posted this pic earlier.  My 98 PST.  Don't have a pic on me of my 99 PST II.  These are my all time favorite multitools, along with my 95 Super Tool.  I have the PST on me right now at work...so handy you don't even know it's there.

Can I join ?  I can't do photos, but I seem to have 98 PSTs (and two PST IIs to make it to a nice neat round 100)  :-[

I dont know about the rest of you, but I would be extremely interested to hear (and see) the variations in Greg and wowaboro's collections. (are there really 98 variations of the PST, or are some of those duplicates?)

Proably plenty of duplicates. Depends on what you think a varation is. I dont think there are as many variations as some claim.

All PSTs (USA+Japan) vary following signs/options:
  • Made country (2 variations)
  • Knife blade type (5 variations)
  • Knife tang stamps / etch (12 variations)
  • Color (2 variations)
  • Pivots (4 variations)
  • Lanyard attach (4 variations)
  • Pliers (4 variations)
  • Cast on pliers (10 variations)
  • Diameter of pliers pivot (2 variations)
  • Hard wire cutter notch (3 variations)
  • Face side handles stamps (13 variations)
  • Back side handles stamps (6 variations)
  • Production date codes (2 variations)
  • Ruler (2 variations)
  • File tang Stamps (4 variations)
  • File cut (3 variations)
  • Can opener cut (2 variations)
  • Awl blade (2 variations)
  • Philips Screwdriver / Off center pivot (2 variations)
  • Medium Screwdriver / Off center pivot (3 variations)
and I know at least 110-115 unique PSTs variations existed ;)

Yep, lots of duplicates in my collection.

I guess how many variations you recognise depends on whether you take the "lumper" or "splitter" approach when you do your classification.  I tend towards being "splitter" when I see significant (to me) variations.  I started off using  the versions described in the "Leatherman PST chronology project" thread, then split from there where it made sense to me.

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,5877.0.html

Looking at my current spreadsheet I come up with the following counts for my PSTs
(HKS = Hollow Knurled Screws), HR = Hollow Rivets, BO = Black Oxide (default is SS), CC = Cap crimper):

Pre-v2 (HKS): 2
v2 (HKS): 1
v2: 13
4238862-only: 3
v2/6: 9
JPST v3 (HR): 5
JPST v4 large lanyard (HR): 2
JPST v4 (HR): 3
JPST v5 (hollow rivets) 3
JPST v5 (HR): 3
JPST v5: 13
v6: 8
v6/7: 3
v7 NATO: 1
v7: 2
v8 BO: 1
v8: 4
v8 SS CC: 6
v10 SS CC: 2
v8 BO CC: 1
v11 BO CC: 3
v10 DLC: 1
v10 Cabela's: 1
v10: 3
v11 Cabela's: 2
v11: 2
v13: 1

PST II: 2

As you can see I mostly collect older/less common PSTs (the v13 snuck in because it was dated 1004/1004 which I am told is the last month they made regular PSTs).  I do have a few more in transit, but my buying has slowed down recently.

Not at all unbelievable considering that Leatherman produced millions and millions of PSTs over the span of two decades.

Very cool that you got a NIB with the price tag. As per the inflation calculator $39.99 in 1990 is $74.46 today  :) Does anyone know how much was the first PST sold for in Cabelas?

My 1/99 PST II.  I hit up my sheaths with brown Kiwi from time to time to keep the luster on them and prevent them from cracking.  I'm loving this thread....great idea Steve!
