Does anyone know how much was the first PST sold for in Cabelas?

Nice to see that, thanks. In 2015 dollars that will be $95.20  ::)

My 1/99 PST II.  I hit up my sheaths with brown Kiwi from time to time to keep the luster on them and prevent them from cracking.  I'm loving this thread....great idea Steve!

That is one of the reasons I never bought on back then. They were way to expensive.

Proably plenty of duplicates. Depends on what you think a varation is. I dont think there are as many variations as some claim.

All PSTs (USA+Japan) vary following signs/options:
  • Made country (2 variations)
  • Knife blade type (5 variations)
  • Knife tang stamps / etch (12 variations)
  • Color (2 variations)
  • Pivots (4 variations)
  • Lanyard attach (4 variations)
  • Pliers (4 variations)
  • Cast on pliers (10 variations)
  • Diameter of pliers pivot (2 variations)
  • Hard wire cutter notch (3 variations)
  • Face side handles stamps (13 variations)
  • Back side handles stamps (6 variations)
  • Production date codes (2 variations)
  • Ruler (2 variations)
  • File tang Stamps (4 variations)
  • File cut (3 variations)
  • Can opener cut (2 variations)
  • Awl blade (2 variations)
  • Philips Screwdriver / Off center pivot (2 variations)
  • Medium Screwdriver / Off center pivot (3 variations)
and I know at least 110-115 unique PSTs variations existed ;)

You Betcha !     Although a photo would give you some major street cred  ;)

Probably about a third to half your list. This is PST owers club thread not a variation thread so I dont want to plung it up with pages of pics and discussion on variations. There is the chronology thread for that or you can start another thread to document the many different variations you have. You have a nice collection of PST's. I would like to see your collection in more detail as I'm sure others would also if you'd care to share it with us.     :)

wowaborro, this is what I'm talking about I only see three variations not five drop, clip, and short clip. What are the other two variations?

But the difference is there, those five blades are obviously five different production runs. Whether it's meaningful or not to differentiate them like this is another question.
From a PST-historical standpoint I would say it makes sense. From a user-perspective, 2 or possibly 3 of those could be said to be meaningful but you're not really collecting close to a hundred PSTs to use them all...

OK, once again:
1. Drop point
2. Clip point (Saber) type 1
3. Clip point (Saber) type 2
4. Clip point (Saber) type 3
5. Short clip point

On the photo is very good visible the difference between the three types of Clip point (Saber) blades: plunge line (angle or perpendicular), grind type (flat or hollow), grind line. It's not single copies - it's serial types, which was produced in different time periods.
In any case, it's my own classification and I don't want anyone to impose this  :)

Very interesting about the different blades. I know there were variation in the awls and screwdrivers. What other tools showed variation over the years ?

Its still a clip point. Grind lines can change for lots of reasons. Different vendors providing the parts, wore or new machinery, the person setting the machine up etc. I'm not seeing enough proof of your dateing indicators to except it as fact. I have lots of PST's from this time period and your theroy isnt  holding up. The grind lines are all over the place on my PST's both stainless and BO from the mid 80's to mid 90's clip points.

Most everything saw changes of some sort over the years. Some of it is in the Chronology thread. Other bits and pieces are located in various other threads. One of the problems is trying to date the changes before late 11-92 when date codes were started. The no date clip point knife blade era seems to be problematic. Some indicators are the files and the switch from hand ground pliers to machine ground pliers during this time. There were over 10 milion PST's made over 21 years.   :)

The chronology thread I suppose is a better place to discuss all the differences over the years.

Those are some very nice collections.  I have a single pst that I bought recently (locally).  It has logos on it so perhaps a supplier's handout but it is very clean and I didn't like to pass it up.  The file had some crud in it which came off by rubbing with a wooden popsicle stick - otherwise it was pretty much immaculate.

The date stamp inside is "0797".

SteveC - thanks.

Upon looking more closely at mine I discovered that the awl (next to the knife blade) seems to be modified for the worse.  In fact it looks like someone broke the tip then used a dull rock to file it down.

This shows the relative length compared to the blade:

I didn't check the smaller tools - usually when I find a knife or tool used its the blades that have been abused (broken tips or deep scratches on the sides from sharpening).

I'd appreciate it if someone would post a couple of photos of the awl on their pst so that I can compare the length and shape.

Thanks,

John.
