There's nothing even on Leathermans website about this, but I found an article in a South African engineering magazine about it, complete with an interview with Tim himself. They said a thousand of these would be available in SA.

Seems like it's not going on here

Thousand?! :o

In this aricle http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/leatherman-celebrates-35th-anniversary-with-revival-of-original-pocket-survival-tool-2018-01-12-1 says:
...The PST is limited to 100x pieces in South Africa and will retail for around R3600,00...
...The Limited Edition PST will be available January 23rd at select Leatherman retailers...

Oh. My mistake. I took the x to be a variable last digit, so 1000, or possibly 1002, up to 1009.

So only a hundred. Somebody said that's over $200 USD. That's bat smurf crazy.

How does this happen? Does Leatherman start gathering all the warranty repair trade-ins over the past, say, five years, and see what they have to work with, or do they do full on genuine tool-up and build an additional assembly line starting from scratch?

Seems like it would be expensive to put all the machinery together to stamp out just a few of these, and then break the assembly line down again. If they did build a whole assy line just for these, they should have just gone ahead and brought them back into production for like a whole year or something.

I am telling you, if I saw a newly minted (circa year 2001 design) Leatherman PST at about $50 on the shelf next to a Wave or even a Rebar, I'd buy the PST every time. And over a Wingman or Sidekick. Most definitely over a Rev, despite the price of the Rev. Those three look more complicated to cut and assemble

Warranty?  Additional assembly line? You dig too deep :D
All's much easier. It's not PST's revival, it's just a limited edition that dedicated to the Anniversary of company (as in 2006 for 45th Cabela's Anniversary).
Tool made from old stock parts, only leather sheath looks like new production.
Quantity is limited and $200-250 price is not too much for serious PST's collectors.

Great idea, but I'd need it to build a dwelling for myself if I ever spent that much for one and my wife caught wind of it

That was my first thought, that they had been collecting warrantee trade-in parts for some years and decided to put a small number of good tools together. I'm tryin to say, it would seem insane to create a line in the factory for such a limited run...although I wish they would create a line and start churning these out again.

I have two PSTs and three PSTIIs, and they are some of the best, simplest tools out there

Reading about the new PST made me dig out mine.

I have three. My original with dates of 06/96 and 05/96

Then I have two Marlboro editions. One used and one NIB...

They both are dated 06/94...

The PST is such a simple, elegant tool. I sometimes grab it just for the memories. I was a TIG welder at a Visteon factory and carried that PST from ‘96 until  mid ‘01 when I bought my Wave. Still have it as well!!
