Camping and Braai
on: January 09, 2016, 08:34:58 PM
I spend a lot of time in the outdoors camping and doing all sorts of things from mountain biking to off-road enduro riding to hunting. (South Africa rocks)

This means lots of braaing ! Just like a barbecue only better. Lots of making fires and camping; outdoor cooking.
Not just in the bush actually, even at home around the pool (A lot)

I thought I would go over my posts and select some that show the camping and cooking , get some badges and remember the good life.

Anytime anywhere. - this was at a MTB event in Kwazulu Natal. Boerewors, traditional sausage

Another traditional thing being braaied liver wrapped in stomach net fat "skilpatjies"  (tortoises)

The best tools for the job, stainless steel tongs and a good knife.

Potjiekos is another traditional outdoor cooking style in a three legged cast iron pot.
Potjie preparations

Coffee while camping is good for the soul.

The tools I always seem to end up with in the bush are my orange military, green farmer and Leatherman Blast.

Camping is done in style, proper canvas tent with stretchers and canvas mattresses. This is when I am in the 4x4 with the family. This is a mountainbike trail campsite in the east called Mankele.

Motorcycle touring is done alone in a small tent. Somewhere near Botswana

More touring - Campsite in Ponta D Ouro Mozambique

Let there be fire, this is the last resort though.

Thanks for letting me remember some of these moments.

Great photos and thanks for reminding me I need to go back there to catch up with some friends :tu:

When I was a student at PE Tech,I always had a braai grid, and a couple of bundles of braai wood in the boot of the car...just in case ;)
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Great pics. I don't care what it's called so long as it's meats cooking over a fire.

I only managed 4 days in my hammock before the car gave out and cut my trip short.

My camping-box-with-everything-in proved it's worth once again, but I finally gave up and admitted to myself I need a small table.

A table is so handy, one day I will have the full front runner roof rack with the stainless table that slides in

I usually lug a small card table with me but even then I find I could use more real-estate. Nice pics.

GG, I dig those old RAV's they are seen in the best places among the serious 4x4's

I also have a "left field" vehicle that punches well above the specs, Suzuki Grand Vitara.

I go anywhere my buddies do with only a lift kit installed.

Broke a shock on the D707 way past Sossous, had to limp home 700km+ on the 31st, but the RAV got me home....
It also made smurfs out of a few serious 4x4's next to the Orange river.......but the poor thing is 20 this year.

Suzukis are potent, I know people that drove the old SWB Vitara's like skateboards  in the dunes  8)

If I could afford it I would buy a Jimny for sure

Jimny's are awesome!

We went to Namibia last year, the Jimny drove where the Hilux's and Ranger's got stuck! And I am a complete novice when it comes to driving off road, the car made me look like a pro.  :D

My wife had the Jimny until last year. Taken it a few places and found its limits with no difflock; also found its strengths in sand and some obstacles where you can choose cool lines nobody else can.

Suzuki NAM got rights to import and sell the Gypsy........lwb Samurai basically.
Same as the Jimny(2nd hand), the Gypsy is attractive because it's about the only reliable&affordable way I can have a 4x4.
The Gypsy is very affordable, but there's 2 issues: You can buy it with a canopy or a tent on the back.  Lot's of great options and better canopies available......if you have the $$$  :-\
Secondly.........no AC

I survived without AC for the best part of my life, but I'm getting too old to sweat like that anymore.....

What I want most of all is the new auto Jimny..........but 250K+

A raised GV with some bash plates can take on anything other 4x4's can.
A very sophisticated traction control system with low range through an auto box and its unstoppable.

EVERYONE who drives with me comments "I never knew it could do that"

The RAV survived another trip, but my faith has been shaken.....

Had myself convinced to buy a Suzuki Gypsy, but I just can't make peace with not having AC.

Visited a little spring in the Gaub pass (https://www.google.com.na/search?q=Gaub+pass&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=707&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiV-JrsydbKAhWG7RQKHavwCVgQsAQIGQ this weekend, getting out of the car in that little valley literally felt like stepping into an oven.

Is there not an aftermarket option for A/C in the Gypsy?

Love the massive space in Nam.

Lesotho has the same "big country" but no matter where you are there are 100 eyes on you,

Got a bit of a lesson on how AC's work, local firm can do everything except the diffuser, so you'll need to find something from a donor car and modify to fit........not really up for that.

I've seen some wonderful fishing pics from Lesotho, didn't know it was that crowded.

The open spaces are amazing, even more so in the South.  Played a guessing game driving from Luderitz about the distance over the plain to the next little hill......I was way off, turns out 35Km  :D 8)
