My LM S2 is naked!
on: August 29, 2008, 02:00:39 AM
Got this idea from a flashlight forum.  I was never fond of the colors the Juices came in, so I stripped mine as soon as I got home from the store.

Paul, that looks really nice! I do prefer clothes on my S2 though.  :D
Sometimes change is a good thing, other times not so much!

I used the powered drain cleaner.  That stuff eats anodizing.  Just put a couple spoonfuls in a glass, and then dip your tool in.  Take a look in about 20 seconds and check if the anodizing is wearing off.  If not, add a little more drain cleaner.  Once the anodizing starts to come off, you can whip the rest off with a paper towel.  Then you'll need to rinse the tool in hot water for about 2 minutes.  I've read that it seals the pores of the Al.  I've never heard of Al having pores, but I trust the person who I learned this technique from.  I then rub down the scales with Scotch Brite to give it that brushed finish.  Last, I spray the entire tool in WD-40 so that the tool doesn't end up rusting.  I then use Militec-1 on the pivots, and Tuff Cloth on the rest of the tool.
BTW, make sure where ever you do this experiment, the place is fairly well ventilated.  Also use glove, eye shields and mask.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips! :) I'm going to be pretty tempted to try this on my S2. It's "grey" has just a hint of purple that I never cared for. :P

It's actually pretty easy.  Just soak the tool long enough for the anodizing to wear off.  I've heard that if you keep it soaking too long, it'll pit.  It hasn't happened to me yet, and I've done several tools already.  The S2 was my first one, and didn't have any problems at all.
BTW, drain cleaner will not affect steel at all.  But the water will.  ;)

Kinda had a slightly bumpy look to it.  Almost like a beadblast finish, but not as fine, and smoother.  If that makes any sense.

The words on it are etched into the scales?  I never noticed on mine, always thought it was printed on!

Yeah, they're etched.  I thought I would loose the words when I decided to remove the anodizing.

It's a good tip when the anodizing on your LM gets all gnarly.

That is awesome!

I have 3 Leatherman Juice SC2's, mostly because they're offered in the clear, silver finish.  Yours looks almost identical to the SC2 clear finish!

I am very tempted to try that out on my Squirts.  Having a plain aluminum finish on them might make me EDC the Squirts over my Micra again!

Good job!
