Been Away For A While
on:
January 14, 2016, 01:11:41 AM
Hi everybody,
I've been away from the forum for a long time, and I doubt anyone will remember me. I had hoped to try my hand at making a multitool that centered around a Knipex wrench, but I never followed up on that. My last real contribution here was a review of the Skeletool which I see is still among the top reviews. I can't believe no one has come up with a really better minimalist multitool over the years since I did that review - at least from what I've seen. I may go back to my Spyderco Bird Wrench, but for now a Skeletool CX still rides clipped to my right pocket.

My multitool and my EDC are just about the same as always - a few new 47 flashlights, but no new multitools that I'm really carrying, although I have picked up a few new Leathermans and a Cattlemans and a Piranha. I'll try to be around a little more. I miss some of the fun conversations we got to.

Welcome back. You may have been away but you never left.

It's funny, I've been looking around a while and even reading some of my old posts to see where I was when I was last really active. As I said earlier in this thread, I'm surprised that there hasn't been much innovation in the last few years in multitools. There have been some interesting one-piece multitools, but nothing that really competes with the Skeletool or other basic designs. Is it because the multitool market hasn't been very good lately, or are the companies just less creative of late? I was really considering carrying more regular tools since I felt the popular multitools didn't give near as much usefulness as regular tools - things like jaws not being big enough to grip large nuts or plumbing parts, or many times needing a separate pliers and screwdriver to tighten a machine screw while holding a nut. I said I might consider carrying my old Spyderco Byrd Wrench again since it solved a couple of those problems, and if it was just a little smaller I would definitely do this. Are there any new tools on the horizon?

In fact I just ordered another Spyderench on eBay. I didn't realize they reissued it a few years ago and then discontinued it again.

Some of both really. I think that many manufacturers think they have explored the plier based tool about as much as they can. I'm not sure how much I agree, but I'm sure the costs associated with designing and producing one piece tools are attractive enough that many may not be looking too hard at plier innovations.
