The Best Wenger - Minathor
on: April 05, 2010, 02:58:40 AM
A while ago I said I had, or may have, found the best Wenger.  Well this is it.  Of course there is no "best", and this won't even be my most used Wenger knife, but I love it.  This one really screams quality even with it's plasitc carrier.  If you look closely the carrier has a few empty positions for your own bits, I purchased the Wenger standard expansion set of 4 Bergeon bits. The stainless steel construction gives this knife real heft, as I'm guessing it does with the other models using these same basic scales (without the leather insert).

The Minathor toolbox tools are from Bergeon.  Technically Wenger identifies the Minathor series as "Watch and Micro-Technology" tools. The name is actually an acrynom; 'hor' standing for 'horological' (or some word derivived from horology).  I can't remember the details, I just like my watches to work these days.

Judging by its tools its a watch makers SAk, the tools are the same as my tools, its a shame they couldnt fit a 2-3 point screw on back remover but think it would be to big and take up to much space, its a very cool SAK  8)   :tu:

I EDCed a caribou minathor for several years and it was my first real SAK, they are great for repairing and modding small electronics, computers, consoles, etc.  The case opening knife won't damage plastic casings if you are careful.

Dear Victorinox, please bring back the Minithor, because these prices are hard to stomach.

I'm sad to say that I remember deliberating on this a couple years ago, at around $100. Victorinox probably won't continue it though. I can't see it being a high-volume seller, maybe only watchmakers were buying it? But in a way, a set of micro tools makes a lot more sense in a SAK than the shrunken-down tools we normally get.

Now, the price is up 250% (compared to the plastic-handled one, anyway) and I'm not willing to pay it. The original plastic-handled one had a fine-tipped tweezers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe the sheath is made from the same material as that found on your knife...in this case it is some species of lizard. Should not be plastic or vinyl.

Nice club version of the Bergeon. I have this one also.  :tu:

I have to agree on the present high price of the Minathor - a few months back I shelled out the ridiculous cost of the Evowood version (smaug's link above) I didn't really have a choice as the Evowood Minathor was the last Evowood missing from my collection. To make it worse I then got hit by UK import duty plus Royal Mails mandatory handling fees......it's cost me an absolute bloody fortune!! Needless to say it's still sealed - I daren't open it thus reducing its collectors value. Luckily I still have the old regular version....but what would I give to own one of those luxury versions you guys have.   :gimme: :gimme:

As for Victorinox rereleasing the Minathor...
I say not, its about time Victorinox did something original.

The Minathors occasionally show up with well-used handles for reasonable prices. Picked up one and had custom carbon fiber/G-10 handles put on it.

I worked for a while doing pocket watch (I still carry a pocket watch and have for many years, a Hamilton 992 or a Howard Railroad Chronometer) and clock repair in jewelry store. While that SAK is beautiful, I can't imagine a watch maker/ repairer actually using it even though the tools are Bergeon. I still have all
my watch makers tools including a staking set/ case openers/ dozens of screw drivers, etc. Really pretty knife, just doubt its true usefulness (but I'd still like to have one in my collection :-)

Francis, if I remember correctly, Minathor is an acronym for the following in French:

MIN(iature) AT(elier) HOR(loge)

Miniature watch workshop

Hello!

I just joined this forum because I noticed there was some information about the Wenger Minathor Bergeon watchmaker's tool. I also noticed that the vendor from whom I bought this item has discontinued it.

I have one that OFREI used to sell called the Classic, with red plastic sides and I cannot recall what it sold for (or what it might be worth today. I did have the extra slots filled with the added 4 tools (mostly screwdrivers) and it is in great condition.

Can anyone tell me it's value?

Thank you in advance

I'f your an horologist, it will be indeed.   I myself just drop my watch off at the jeweler's when it needs repair, so I don't see an actual need for it--even though it would be a interesting piece in my collection.

The best in my opinion--Handyman/Safari (since this one has the small clip blade) which is now known as the Victorinox Delemont S18--since it's essentially an 85mm Victorinox Fieldmaster.

Wenger seems to have made many more special purpose SAKs than Victorinox--one with a special tool for unlocking toilet paper dispensers (the Toilet Paper SAK), one for emergency braces repair (Orthodon or something like that), one for working with lab gas chromatography equipment, the three Berninas (in two sizes)  for seamstresses, and then this one for watches.

Minathor tools usually fetch between 80 and 150 €- depending on demand, condition and exact model.
