Why do people (and me too) like Titanium so much?
  • It screams to deaf when you cut it with hacksaw
  • It wears your hacksaw as much as it gets cut
  • It blinds you when you burn it with its bright flame
  • It breaks your drill bits
  • It is a pain to grind
  • It gets scratched when you look at it
  • It breaks when you want to bend it
  • It bends when you want to break it
But
  • It has so lovely colors and is tougher and lighter than its steel equivalent

I made three [four] more clips:
(old one is the second from the left)
(Image removed from quote.)
One broke (again)
(Image removed from quote.)

Haha all true.  It does machine very nicely though. With high rpm and slow feed rate it cuts nicer than steel.  Cutting by hand though is a huge pain.

Sadly I can only do this by hand  :gimme:

I sanded and flamed again some of the clip to try new colors:

I wasn't really happy with the thickness of my Micarta scaled Compact, thus it came rarely in my pocket, so yesterday his scales were sanded nearly down to the stock scale thickness -which is much better-

Now the scales are lighter (in weight, but also in color tone) and smoother! (used grit 80 to remove material, then 120,320,400, and 800/1000, I didn't have thinner grit under the hand)

I'll carry it more often now  :climber:

For now the clip won't be out of Ti (no time for making one), but from copper wire:

I don't like trashing, and I had some pieces of clips I broke during the making process this summer; so here is a microTi clip made ouf of half a broken full-size clip:

Time to make a Trail Guide

There are some times I want a Trail Guide, but I want it with the current metal file and the older blade

I already made a Wenger sized Trail Guide baby a few days ago, that I am happy with, but still wanted to make an "original" Trail Guide.

What do I have for a start :
- Already re-assembled Compact (from Compact and Camper parts)
- Handyman with current metal file and back spring chisel

The Compact :

The Handyman :

1) Disassembly of the Compact
Drilling existing pivots (note the bad peening I did on that one before)

Time to pry out the parts

2) Disassembly of the Handyman

Removed first layer (blade layer)

3) Assembly of the Blade layer
no pics, I forgot

4) Assembly of the metal file layer and the separator
I used the Handyman file and not the one from my mountaineer because I wanted to have a back tool. An awl at first, but the ones I had were not in good enough condition. Finally went for the chisel :

5) Assembly of the scissors layer
I wanted to use the hook without nail file from the Handyman, but forgot during the assembly process...

6) Blank testing

7) Putting washers back on

8 ) Cutting excess (about 1mm above the washer is nice for peening)

9) Peening
no pics, I was too nervous in the process to think of taking pics ...

10) Putting on the scales (re-use of the black scales of the disassembled Compact) and family picture

[WIP] WengerTrailGuide with Locking Blade
Reply #86 on: August 25, 2018, 06:56:39 PM
today's challenge : make a non locking blade spring (with combo tool) able to get a locking blade !

Let's disassembly the custom Wenger trail guide from the previous build :

after disassembling the a wenger with locking blade and evo scales, I found out that contrary to Vics, the washers on one side look one piece with the rivet... Let's drill these to actual usable washers :

It was then time to reproduce the cut on the spring... not an easy task to get something working...
Top is original locking spring, bottom is the one being cut to size with a dremel cutting disc

Lots of fine tuning using a diamond file

To pre-peen the rivets from a 2.5mm brass rod, I made an aluminium jig for the vice :

Rivet is ready for assembly, final peening is done once the SAK is assembled!
