Mora Companion
on: January 26, 2016, 11:58:45 PM
I was going to ask this in the "new moras"  http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,56808.450.html thread but don't want to derail it - all the talk of new moras has wakened the green eyed monster - the garberg is out of my league and TBH would be wasted on me. same with the bushcraft though thats cheaper and available.

what do people think of the companion ? just the normal SS one, not heavy duty or anything. They are very affordable, about €8 ish on ebay (plus shipping). Few posts i looked at seem very positive. I can't see it been used for anything heavy, bit of messing during the summer outside cooking etc.

Thoughts ?

DO IT :pok: :pok: :pok: :pok:

It's similar to the one I have, which is outstanding especially for the price. Just a nice, no nonsense blade that will do just about anything you can ask for

We keep a stainless companion in the kitchen for daily use. When the chopping board dulls the edge it comes back nice and sharp on freehand stones.

I have other carbon(clipper, 511, scout) steel mora knives and one other stainless (mora 2000)that I use as all purpose outdoor knives.

I discovered mora on accident when i bought a carbon scout for 7 dollars at a flea market.  These are One of the greatest values in the world of knives

Loved my carbon companion so much I bought 4 of the Bahco branded SS companions (<$8 each new!) and gave 2 away. I have an old style 511, old style 546mg, carbon companion mg, 2x bahco companion ss orange, a pro S, a pro C, a 612, and a #3.

Some of the best knives around, consistent HT, good steel (uhb20c [1095] and 12c27), and an unbeatable price, heck you can have a whole collection for the price of a quality multi. My whole collesction could be rebought for just over $100.

Also fantastic because you aren't afraid to just use the darn things, because they're easily sharpened, fixed (sharpen out a broken tip) or simply replaced.

Can't go wrong with the companion, I've even used mine to pry my motorcycle brakes apart when they stuck after getting moisture in the line!

I have given one to my roomie SS and my daughter has companion as her hiking knife.  I use a carbon #2 which is a terrific knife.  Before I got my Mora I always heard how it was a good knife for the money.  My opinion is that Mora is just a good knife and at a good price.

Given the Companion can be had for less than the cost of a large takeaway pizza I'd say it's still worth it.  Your kids like beans on toast, right? :D

Have you also thought about a good folding saw like the Bahco Laplander?

 :pommel:

Back to actually "helping", do have a look at the Bahco 2444 knife that's already been mentioned.  It's a Companion (still made by Mora), but with the orange Bahco branding.  It can also sometimes be had at a better price than the standard Companion.

I love the blade shape of the Companion   :tu: , I got one after getting a BAHCO 2444 (hmm, I need to post some pics). I totally prefer the Companion's handle and sheath over its BAHCO cousin, much better quality for just €2-3 more.

ok, fortunately, I don't need a folding saw - and for the rare occasions I do, I have a couple aldi/lidl ones which do the job.

I'll check out the bahco 2444 though, mebbe I might be able to give them a couple fish fingers with the beans on toast :D

You cant go wrong with a companion. Very capable and comfortable knives to use.

Also, you might want a mora 511 and a Classic no1, and maybe a no2? Did I mention the Robust, its really good and the Buschcraft black is great.

so, stainless steel or carbon ? (for all practical purposes i doubt i'd know the difference) from my reading/youtubing this is what i understand -

stainless more rust resistant
harder to sharpen (and my skill there isn't great, but improving)
harder so more likely to chip if i do something stupid

carbon
more prone to rust so needs better care
easier to sharpen
less likely to chip if i do something stupid so easier to fix

thoughts ?

That about covers it.

Re:Carbon blades...soon as you get it,force a patina to protect the blade.

Another difference is that a carbon blade will leave a metallic taste on any food you prepare with it. Less so if you force a patina on it (with something acidic like vinegar etc).

Personally I prefer a carbon blade as they seem to have a life of their own and you have to take care of them (not much more than drying them). After prolonged use they take on a patina and it's like a map of it's travels.

I have a carbon Mora and my wife has a stainless one as she isn't at all interested in keeping it maintained.

Here's mine;

And my carbon Opinel (you HAVE to get one of these too )
