Antonini Knives
on: January 31, 2016, 02:19:19 AM
I recently acquired an older Antonini electrician's/cable knife in a lot, and just looked at their site, and see several different models that appeal to me. The prices on the knives (often under $20) are very reasonable to me.  On the older one, the blade (which had been dulled from use) sharpened well, and I really like the wood handles.  Only thing that bugged me is the same problem I have with all single blade Electrician's--the large tang used to accommodate the cable stripper.

How is the quality on these knives.  Are they worth picking up? I'm looking at three (one with blade/saw, the other two single bladed) that total $24.

I have two of their folders, a wood handled sodbuster, and a horn handle resolza. Fit and finish is rough. Blade is not centered on either. There was a good bit of gunk in the pivot of the sodbuster, but it flushed out. But, the steel gets sharp pretty easily, and stays sharp for a decent amount of time. The resolza cuts like a mother smurfer, and both get carried. Not often, but they do make it into the rotation on occasion. I would buy from Antonini again.

They did eventually reply.
They wanted €40 inc shipping for the one with a saw.
The ordering prosess was a bit weird thoug. They gave me their paypal adress, but told me to order it through a 3rd party website in italian, that did not sell that model. So I didnt order one.

I just received a couple from Amazon...the same model, one with saw. They were about what I expected...rough working knives. Blades are polished and walk and talk are good. The back springs are strong but not nail breakers. They do need to be sharpened out of the box...but that should be easy, blade grind looks good. I was looking at the stripping notch as a firesteel scraper and the spike for knot work. Firesteel scraping was only so-so compared to a carbide scraper. The 3 sided spike is smoothly polished...so it should work well as a marlinspike.

I tried the saw on a live branch. It's got a kerf ground into the blade like a SAK saw but seems slower cutting...probably due to a combination of blade thickness and tooth pattern. It does the job but not as well as a SAK saw. I would consider buying from them again...already eyeballing a few other models.

The Antonini Nauta would be on my wishlist but it is way too pricey.  :twak:

Over a year later,  I finally bit the bullet and bought a few--altogether, those 6 only cost me $27, with free shipping for those 6 and a  15% off 6 promotion the importer/seller (IKAT Supply) is currently doing.   When they show up, I'll be posting my initial thoughts, and throughout use. The first one will likely be the one I'll be carrying the most, since it's only slightly more expensive than a used Camper, but brand new, so that means if I screw it up or lose it working on the farm, it isn't a big deal. Just order another.

"Professional Multitool Electrician Knife With Saw".   $12

"Full Arch Pruning Knife, 65mm".  $3.75

"Fishing Knife 85mm Partially Serrated".  $5.

"Professional Electrician's Knife with 2 Wire Strippers.  $4

"Fontainin Fishing Knife". $3.75

12 Gauge Shotgun Shell Knife, Green. I had a cheapo knockoff of this, what's surprising is that $3.50 is actually less than the Far East copies are here locally.

Do tell how they hold up. They have a couple of nice designs going (not that I seem to be able to find them here in Sweden).

They are sold in Greece, surprisingly. I am through a penny knife phase, so I might buy a few soon.

The Cable  SAK-alike blew apart on me. The brass portion of the bird's eye rivet popped off while boring a hole with the spike. Before I realized it, the spike jumped the backspring and the liner spread out. . I think I pushed its limits too far, but Vics have withstood as much force as I put on the awl (drilling through hardwood, by the way) without THAT happening.  . I made a similar repair to a Cub Scout knife that had a lose pin and the punch jumped its backspring, so I should be able to fix this.
