Soldier or Electrician?
on: February 03, 2016, 02:49:14 AM
I'm sure this topic has been covered before but as much as I like Alox Pioneers I really don't like the lanyard bump that rubs agains the palm of my hand. Over the last few years I've been a Soldier fan until recently. I'm finding that the Electrician not only does not have the lanyard but I'm finding more use for the electricians blade more so than the can opener.

What are others preference? Now that I've been using an Electrician exclusively I'm looking for different colors, if they exist, and even custom Ti variants.

Whoo hoo I also am not a fan of the lanyard nub. The electrician is a great SAK and is less expensive and more common than a soldier model. If any other colors pop out Swiss Bianco would be the place that I would start looking. And like you mentioned you could always go custom. I got mine through Syph007

I think the can opener is kind of useless, since most of the cans have a ring to pull it open.

So therefore I also prefer the extra blade on my electrician and rancher.

The Electrician just wins for me as it has (almost*) the perfect everyday 'pocket knife' set of tools for me - large and small blade, punch/awl and light pry bar.  I don't open tin cans often enough to warrant carrying a can opener and for anything else I'll grab my Spirit.

I've some degree of fondness for the Electrician and have carried one for a long time. For colors though, you'll likely need to go to Swiss B, or a modder. The black one from Swiss B comes with the split ring but that's an easy fix. I've a few of the newer colors coming, like the copper and coyote brown, but they're out for the needed eblade installation still. I myself though still prefer the old style cross, but sometimes concessions must be made. :)

Here are a few that were handy. One must have backups. If one is good, then a couple dozen must be fantastic.

A lot of old Alox models had no keyring from the factory.

In general, I prefer the can opener. I can use that to strip some wire if need be but I can't use the e-blade or pruner blade to drive screws or open cans of food (I suppose I could try but I really shouldn't).

The e-blade is useful but I prefer the pruner blade over it.

The pruner blade, I have mixed feelings about it. My first alox (and first big SAK as an adult) was a Harvester. I like that blade, it has lots of uses but not easy to sharpen -by me anyhow- and sometimes I freak out that it might hit my finger while closing it ---->  :sa:

The keyring is useful but it can be annoying, esp. when using the big knife blade. I circumvent the annoying part by either using a somewhat thick lanyard or by extending the cap lifter.

I don't carry my Electrician because it hasn't a keyring...

Either for lanyards or danglers, I like keyrings in all my knives.

Before I left the house for work I was fondling the Electrician when I came across a leaky bathtub. I needed a Philips driver. I put the electrician up and went for my Deluxe Tinker.

Well... that´s a tough question.  The Pioneer is a great EDC as is the Electrician. To me it depends on my mood. Sometimes the Pioneer is my way to go and sometimes I really like the Electrician.

I´m a fan of the lanyard ring and I miss it on the Electrician. The sheepfoot on the Electrician is a great tool.
My only problem is - everytime when I could need a philips screwdriver, the Electrician is on my side  :bnghd:

Love how the Electricians look, have several, but don't think I've ever EDC'ed one...always need a screwdriver or a can opener and I know how strip wire with the main blade if I need too (and I have). Last time I worked with wiring, used my Trail Guide.

I would suggest the Electrician. Soldiers are great, but you will have to pay as much for one of those as a new Pioneer, and in that range, they're often well-used.  Try to obtain a 1993 and before, (keep in mind that "93" dated Soldiers can be found with both new and old configurations) that had a hollow rivet for lanyard attachment and a thicker bottle opener/screwdriver with a sharpened edge inside the arc of the bottle opener.

Swiss electrician supply company Bugnard has a few different models with the electrician or hawkbill blades in a golden yellow color (with their logo printed on the engraving panel) at roughly retail for the silver Alox in the US (Swiss Franc and American Dollar are about the same

My thoughts mirror some that have been said already. I love my Farmer and Pioneer and they are often enough in use exactly for the tools on the can opener that going with an electrician blade would be pointless. they have their place but with my needs not so much

The more time I spend on here the more I think 'ooh I want that'. However when I first read this thread I looked at both knives (I am still learning about the models) to compare, I have a solider but now think ' I want an electrician'. Both have their plus points and it would be good to swap between the two. I do think the can opener must get limited use.

What does the sheepsfoot blade do that the regular big blade can't?

What does the can opener / Phillips driver do that the sheepsfoot can't?

Pioneer for me.
