13b. Chisel/scraper edge for the serrated blade. Something I use a lot that the Surge now has.  :)

Really nice, you really upped the utility factor of that blade!

Thanks 42, I didn't really think I needed 2 blades, but now it's the business!  :tu:

I've always been of the mind that a multi-tool is the place for a partly serrated edge because you're going to have some serious jack-of-all-trades deal going on anyway, your solution just might be the way to get around that.

I think a plain edge is the most versatile, and a serrated edge is more aggressive, but 99% of serrated grinds are only on one side, so they tend to cut in an arc. Good for small cuts, but when using for anything where you want a precise cut they are pretty worthless. Even trimming a radiator hose to size, the agressiveness is good, but the end is never nice and even, and usually leaves a ragged edge in reinforced hose if the blade is not perfectly sharp. Peeling potatoes with a serrated edge also is inefficient, frustrating, and a little dangerous. I would put a back bevel on a serrated or combo edge if I needed it to optimize it's versatility, but I usually have a good plain edge around if I need one. I suppose that's why most full size LM's have both.  :)

I would say the Surge is growing on me, but it seems to be shrinking?, maybe both.  :)

Cool tools! Despite never owning one, I've always liked the way they did the name on the Pulse.

Thx WD, I like the Pulse a lot but have yet to carry it. It reminds me of the Spirit in a way, just a nice well made tool.  :tu:

19. A little disappointed with the opener tool on bottles, it works well on tin cans, but it's not easy to use on bottles. I tried opening it to deploy the opener, then closing the tool, but the handle is in the way of getting it hooked under the bottlecap. I then opened one handle all the way which made it easier, but it doesn't hook easily under the cap either way. In fact it's so fiddly to use I reached for something else for the next bottle. A lot of small operations for something that should be quick and easy. Even the Style PS carabiner opener is much better for bottles, and easier.  :salute:

I've noticed the same thing with the Wave. The handle is always in the way and the "hook" portion of the opener is WAY too small!

Exactly, maybe using a SAK all these years has spoiled me for bottle openers, but I don't think so, it's just not a great combo tool.  :-\

That's it. I can't come up with anything new to say about the Surge. I like the tool and may carry it again, and it will be finding a new home in my tool bag. I just have too may options to be carrying this exclusively. It will be a go-to multi for heavier duty work which is not often this time of year for me. It has it's strengths, but there are a few drawbacks as well, overall I would say it's an excellent tool and the best Leatherman I have had to date. 3 weeks is enough.  :)

Is the Surge still available, or has it been retired?

Still available according to the online Leatherman catalog.  Definitely on my must have list.....like I've said elsewhere, they are a BEAST!  Love the scissors on a full size m/t.
