Mora Rust Part Deux
on: February 11, 2016, 05:13:05 PM
The rust on one of my black 510's is back. Some of you may recall I dealt with this last year.  The rust formed on the factory oiled blade sitting un-used in the plastic sheath.  Used a little Flitz to remove it and forgot it. Well, not surprisingly, the rust is back, just like last time. Checked all the others and they're fine.

I call this "spider rust" and have only seen it one other time on my knives...on my carbon Grohmann Canadian belt knife. It had a tiny spot on it when I bought it. In general, all my carbon knives, even the ones stored in leather sheaths, do not rust.

Orig rust

New rust

In the soup (for 12 hours)

Then due to a leak, had to redo it again.

Here it is....something is still up.

Still rust in the seam and letters...will repeat.

I'm thinking that I didn't get it clean enough before the soak (that Flitz is tough stuff to remove) notice the shiny (protected) spot. So it will get another alcohol scrub before it goes back in.

Will update with the results....

My mora has seen so much (ab)use that it has formed a natural patina, it never rusts unless i will store it with a water droplet or moist on the blade.

It could be. I runs in weird veins and it could be following impurities through the steel. That would explain how it emerged from under the factory oil on the blade.

This is the special run 510 Black  Produced for a company in Germany before the 510's were again a catalog item from Mora. The other 510 Black is fine as are the reg 510's.

The shape of these is gorgeous...easy to see why they were so popular.

It looks like it migrated from under the handle. I wonder if there was some moisture trapped there from when the handle was attached.

Weelllllll, I'l tell ya.

I opened some packages Thursday evening with it and haven't seen it since.

And........while I was doing the rust treatment, I misplaced the kydex sheath it came out of so I had to dig out the orig sheath and now have lost the whole damn thing.  I did, while looking for it, find the kydex sheath I had lost.....

I remain optimistic........   Will report back as soon as I find it.
