The SAK as part of a duo.
on: February 14, 2016, 07:25:20 PM
Okay, we love our SAK's. That's why we're all here on a forum that is for fans of the Swiss Wonder. We carry our SAK's, we fondle our SAK's, and use them daily for all sorts of things. The open can, bottle, mail, screw screws, unscrew screws, punch holes, open wine bottles with out without a cork screw.

But what to do when things get tough? I mean beyond where any normal SAK should not be asked to go? How many pair up their SAK with something a bit heavier? More robust.

being a lifelong hiker, camper, canoe and kayaker, and nature lover, it was not unusual for me to find myself in far off places. The kind of places that when cell phones were finally invented, there was no signal. The boonies. The wilderness. Mountains, deserts, far off rivers and lakes. I trusted the SAK in my pocket just far, knowing that after all, it was a mighty pocket knife, but in the end it was still a pocket knife. Even with a saw, a SAK has to know it's limitations. So I always seems to have a tool around to "back up" the humble SAK. I've covered many miles in the wilderness with a SAK in a pocket and a hatchet or small machete in the pack. Most times it wasn't needed, but once in a while it was. Some chopping, some splitting of kindling.

What do you pair up your SAK with?

Sak and a hatchet; goes a long way in eastern hardwood forest.

SAK and a small machete works well in brush country.

SAK and 'snubbie' for this times you find yourself in a bad neighborhood! :D

I´m not that outdoorsman (anymore). I want to spend the time have left from work with my family. As my son, 2 years now, is growing so fast I want to be as home as often. I also have the shooting hobby.

Well, in Germany it is nearly impossible to carry guns in public legally. So this is no option at all.

I just thought about Carl´s opening post of this thread and found that I most of the time (90 %) I carry an SAK I have a flashlight in reach or even pared with the SAK in the same pocket. Every time at work I have a pair like this...

or this...

When I go out to the woods mostly for working like firewood processing. So no real pairing of an SAK with a chainsaw or a winch. Like a maul and wedge.

So a flashlight it is for me. :)

Mr. Carl (cbl) has nice toys.

Right now I am pairing a "Don't Tread on Me" Tinker with a Manager.  For me, a 91mm and 58mm is a tasty combo.

And as always, I have is a light or two, a mini Sharpie and a firearm.  Everything required for righteous daily living.

That's okay, Andi, at my age I'm not gutting out in the wilderness much anymore. My outdoors activities now consists of short to moderate day hikes. A SAK and a light is always in the pockets.

Nice wheelguns gents!  I usually pair mine up with one of the Leathermans I own depending on what kind of work I'm involved with.  Lately, I've been carrying just the SAK again, along with a flashlight.  If I'm on the road, I'll pair a SAK and a small flashlight up with my PPK, as you just never know....   Out in the woods I've a reproduction British issue 18th century Tomahawk that is a great camp axe and actually throws fairly well too.  Great topic idea CBL51!

I'm looking at that Parang for quite a while now. How do you like it?

I got it recently. But for chopping small trees, splitting of branches, making camp, etc. he did the job.
I used it one small trip (2 nights) and i loved it.
It comes with a survivalkit, but this is junk, i replaced everything with good stuff.

Vic OH Soldier and Hercules is the duo I go with most these days..
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Normally I pair my SAK with one of my flashlights. I always carry a SAK and I always carry a flashlight.

But if necessary I can always call in some bigger tools like my BK7 or my tomahawk axe.
