Elgin Alligator With Dies, Wood Tray, and Leather Case
on: February 19, 2016, 02:41:37 AM
Hi All,

I have this Elgin Alligator tools which I purchased several years ago, but have never seen another "Kit" like it.  There was a person on this forum who had dies with their tool, but no wood tray and leather wrap.  I have a copy of the patent (809,755) and have looked up other information.  But I cannot find if this was a normal kit, or "upgrade" during the time it was sold.  Does anyone have any insights on this?  What do you think of this tool kit?  Thank you for your time and comments!

The leather pouch set is a rarer set version of the Elgin because most of the pouches have deteriorated due to advanced age or poor storage.  The sets are uncommon, but the pouch with a full set of dies is more uncommon.  This is the first time I've seen the die holder. Nice find!

I've seen one before.

Nice. Apart from the adjustable wrench, what are the dies etc for?

Cutting threads in metal rods or reestablishing threads on a bolt.

Good evening everyone.

I have been meaning to get back on the forum and say thank you again for your comments and information.  I would really your opinions.  About 5 years ago I purchased the tool at an auction, and have enjoyed displaying it in my office.  But I am thinking about selling it.  Mostly due to other projects I would like to work on.  What is a fair asking price?

On another note, I am going to try and write a review on my Gerber Suspension.  I have had it for several years and is on my side daily.  Great tool.  The sheath I want to burn with extreme prejudice. :)

The last one I saw went for $235, but it was in better shape with more dies.  Vintage tool prices overall have been a little off lately, but individual tool  prices can be above expectations.

It is hard to get a reliable estimate, as it mostly depends on who wants it at the time it is offered for sale. If you get two (or more)  bidders that want a particular item the selling price can go much higher. There are quite a few currently being offered on US ebay at the moment, with prices ranging from $11.00 to $56.50 (but most don't have any dies, or only have one die, not a set like yours). Looking at ones that have sold recently on ebay, most have sold for less than $20.00 (plus shipping).

I just bought one without any dies for $15.99 B-I-N  :)

I was just at an auction where one sold. It was in almost-new condition, in its original wooden box, with 5 dies. Hammer price was $225.00
