I haven't been camping for many years, but I'm planning to take a trip with my 13yr old son in the near future and I'll need to get some equipment together. I'll watch this thread with interest Poncho!

I used to come here a lot.

There's no real necessity besides a good knife!

Though if you were to believe Gary Paulsen, the essential is a hachet.

I say go with both. :D

Could anybody possibly have any links to some good quality and/or inexpensive fixed blades or big folders and/or some good examples :D the reason for the inexpensive part is because I want to be able to put a good quality kit together with a small expense

not that I may but I am doing this thread out of curiosity more than anything :D

I recommend Mora of Sweden. Inexpensive fixed blade goodness. =D

http://www.ragweedforge.com/ - Nice guy to deal with.
http://www.bensbackwoods.com/ - Haven't used 'em but other people around here have.
www.eknifeworks.com - Used to have free shipping on all orders, don't really have that going on anymore...

Other places too, lots of people carry them...
You'll sometimes find them under Frosts of Mora and KJ Eriksson, due to these two companies merging at some point.

EDIT: Right, Marttini too.

u might want some marttiini or mora for starters, theyre good cheap fixed blades indeed.u shouldnt jump to tacticals atleast first, although cold steel´s srk is one hellova all-around user knife too.but i really suggest u get some Puukko/scandi first, theyre all about outdoors, where u really dont need any exotic steels at first,or blades with some nice forging pattern, its irrelevant for starters knife  :D

I also agree a Mora is a very nice knife to start off with. Get several (different sizes, kinds), they are cheap and
you get the same shipping cost from Ragnar no matter how many you order.

Your going to want fire, for cooking, keeping warm and the fun of it, so you'll need a chopper or an axe to cut up wood.
Good choppers are not cheap (100 ish +) but you can get a decent axe for less but you need to learn to use it!
Have somebody teach you or look at the instructional stuff online and practice "AT HOME" in the yard in case you miss! :P

A good tent, which doesn't have to be expensive (for a decent 2-3 season one), now is the time for some good deals,
remember get bigger than you need, they lie (4 man is good for 2, 2 man is good for 1 etc).

A good sleeping bag, try not to skimp here, it's something that you'll have for a long time and a good nights sleep is
important. since your new at this, I'd stay away from "down" if I were you, they need special care and bad if you get wet.

-It doesn't have to be 0 (zero) rated or below, and mummy styles are popular (I like rectangle, more room) but mummies
are darn warm. We got a liner to go inside (fleece) great for more warmth if you need it (more layers), and way easier to
clean a liner than the whole bag! (you sweat and are not the cleanest you've been while camping).

A good sleeping "Pad" is very nice too, keeps you comfy (less bumps/rocks underneath you), warm and dryer.
they have closed cell (foam like) and/or open cell (inflates/deflates) some people use both. Now is a good time for them too,
we got ours for 30 bucks (sales) but they run up over 100 bucks (thicker/more comfort, stronger),
I'd say to keep it around 3/4 of an inch for starters, give or take a 1/4.

It sounds like your going to do some car camping and not planning on carrying everything yourself (I'm guessing here)
so you can go "heavier" with stuff, you'll need a cooler for your food, and you can bring extra stuff.

They have very nice review-sites online, where average people talk about the things they have and how they work, I
suggest reading them for any product you want, just don't buy it from that site (more expensive).

A cast Iron skillet is a must if you are not hiking, and I like perculators for coffee.

If you have an army surplus store nearby check them out for some good deals, esp. on sleeping bags

And dont forget insect repellent!

Someone might have already mentioned this but water purifier.  I have a First Need purifier and it works great.  Cold Steel make some good, fairly inexpensive knives... I would spend the money on a Benchmade though.

Like most things, I would bring different items depending upon how long I was going away for, the time of year, the terrain, and how far from civilization I will be.

For the average casual short 3-4 day trip, I tend to be pretty minimalist and bring something like this:

- Knife
- Rope
- Shelter: Tarp or something similar, possibly a hammock, sometimes tent , sometimes nothing
- Blanket or sleeping bag
- Change of socks, underwear, shirt
- Food
- Small basic first aid kit
- Small basic survival kit
- Fire starting materials
- Cooking and eating utensils
- Water or water purifying kit
- Flashlight
- Sometimes hatchet or axe

I think that's it. I actually haven't been out in a few years, so I may have missed something...

You will never go back to an axx or a hatchet. So much more usefull and very easy to use. Plus it has the cool factor!

A good rucksack to pack all your equipment, and suitable clothing for the weather you expect to have when outdoors.

Fire, Steak and whiskey, all necessities to me  :D If you're worried about storage and transport fear not, just put one of these in your kit and strap a crate of whiskey on each side, a bit of training to get her to follow you through the wilderness and you'll be sorted!
