Carrying my WENGER BERNINA
on: February 21, 2016, 08:37:28 PM
I suddenly decided to carry my Berina for a couple of days. It was a spur of moment decision. I always wanted to see how capable these particular tools from Wenger are. This is going to be though as the Bernina has only one screwdriver and no blade :ahhh.

FIRST TASK
Cut out some flyers for my birthday party. Clearly, that is what the knife is made for. Passing this with flying colors

That cutting wheel is awesome

Now I want a cutting wheel on all my SAKs

2ND TASK
Isn't it great if you loose enough weight so you can make your belt a bit tighter? Well, I was at a point where there are no more holes...

So take out the awl on my SAK to punch one... wait, the Bernina has a LEATHER PUNCH :D

Like with all back-layer tools, the spring is a bit on the weak side, but the punch is sharp and does short work of the leather. Used that metal needle to push the leather out.

Made a 2nd hole next to the first to enlarge it a bit. Clean punch I rate it aces :tu:

The punch answers the age old question "Cork-screw or Phillips?". Neither, give me a punch :tu:

Not sure how much use I will get out of this SAK but I will try.

I'm quoting from the box

 :D

And yes, I will be hard pressed to use every tool on that but it's pretty cool. Lots of rather unique implements... also rather sewing specific implements.

I'd like to buy one for my missus (she's into all that sewing and embroidery stuff), but you hardly ever see them for sale (except for one rather ambitious ebay seller) and when you do they are usually quite expensive.

This is such an interesting tool and one of the reasons I'm sad that Wenger is no more. I have a little dream of finding one in a charity shop one day, though I'd feel bad if I didn't tell them how rare it is. I do quite a lot of sewing (repairs and making bits and bobs) and this looks genuinely useful (I hope they didn't actually call it a 'Lady tool' though).

Thanks for posting your experiences with it too E-Thizzle  :salute:

Not really, I was just wondering how the cutting wheel would fare against a pizza (and good luck whittling with it or cutting pizza with Wenger scissors :dwts: ).  :)

Not surprising, all things considered. Women's suffrage in Switzerland I was a bit disappointed when I found out. Then again, I was young and didn't know any better.

Cutting Wheel vs. Pizza
Kidding, the cutting wheel can cut 2mm tops, so you'd be better off cutting the pizza with the scissors.

The cutter uses an 18mm OLFA blade (replacements available olfa.com).

The blade rotates well and it cuts like the devil, didn't even notice the seam when cutting those pant legs in two. No preparation was required and I did not hold or fix the pants.

It has a nook on the backside for easy thread-cutting, even when closed.

I had another task for my Bernina... exchanging the SIM-card on my mobile phone (no photos of the process for obvious reason).
The small flat did most of the work, but the strong needle came in handy too. I'm really starting to dig that needle, I think that would make a great addition to any SAK and have to say this is my favorite tool on the Bernina. The cutting wheel is great too but the needle is more versatile.

Interesting subject!   :tu:

This little device is used to thread needles. Maybe it could also be used to thread fishhooks.
