found a use for the useless hook
on: February 27, 2016, 04:36:11 AM
One of my responsibilities at the Florida Renaissance Festival is to maintain and rent mobility scooters for our guests with physical limitations.  I needed to plug in a scooter for charging this morning, but the tab on the charging port cover was gone.  It must have broken off somewhere.  It is rubber and probably got brittle over time.  It is nearly impossible to open the cover without the tab because the cover fits flush to keep dust and moisture out.  I had to pry the cover open with the small knife blade on the Huntsman, then I used the awl/reamer to bore a hole through the cover, and finally I tied a loop of jute twine with a big knot on the end and pulled the loop through the cover with the hook.  Now I can easily open the cover to the charging port again.  When I have a chance I will seal the hole with a dab of silicone, but at least for now I can open the port to keep the scooter fully charged.

That doesn't stop me! (Usually. This year, medical problems cancelled it.)  Going to the Texas Ren Fest is my annual vacation from reality.

My wife uses that same brand of mobility scooter, and so far the charging port hasn't given us any trouble.  Did have a cracked fuse under the battery that gave us fits,  til we dropped by the local repair shop and they diagnosed the problem.

I went to Texas Ren Fest last year! It was my first experience at one, and myself and the kiddos had a great time.

Thanks for the accolades. I enjoy doing the festival and I'm glad some of you have had the chance to visit festivals where you are.  This is our 3rd weekend and we have 4 more to go.  We were open yesterday just for schools which is why I was there on a Friday.  There is an independent film that was made at The Florida Renaissance Festival in 2014 that gives a fascinating look behind the scenes.  I'm in it for about 2 seconds. :D

I actually used the hook on my Compact today, pulling cotton from a bottle of ibuprofen. It's a tool you forget about until the perfect opportunity shows up.....

Plus that rustic twine makes the mobility cart blend in a little more in the Ren setting.

What some do not know about is the second position for the hook past 90 degrees. I used this feature a while ago on a Compact to make a stand for my iPod Touch which (unlike my phone) doesn't have a kickstand in its case. Propped it up so I could watch Snow White and the Huntsman, which I thought from the title would be about Snow White and her Swiss Army Knife. Turns out the Huntsman was no SAK, he was some dude with an ax that had gone (at least partially, if not completely) off the rails.

Nice stand! You should get your money back on that film. In the same vein, that's the reason I walked out of 'The Woodsman'.
