I'm just waiting to see the new MacGyver use it to zip line away from the baddies.

Wait.  It will happen.

Medical Bill strongly discourages grabbing a hot oven rack with bare hands! Another great use for the hook when the SAK you have in your EDC has one and you don't want to don oven mits just to check on something that's broiling or baking . . . or to stir or baste it periodically . . . as they're cumbersome to handle implements while wearing them. Use the hook to pull the rack out. You don't want it to hook completely around the wire rack (most rack front rods are too thick) or you'll have to fiddle with it to get it unhooked. Just grab it enough with the end of the hook to pull on it. If going over the top has too much friction or drag, use the hook from underneath the rack front and pull. Use the bottle opener (or combo opener) to push it back in (same thing applies, go from underneath if there's too much friction between oven and rack).

I've used this successfully numerous times when baking in the lower oven. Recreated how I do this using the upper one (easier to photograph ;) ).

For those that have a Plus model with the hook, it can be used to hold the pen.
  • Open the hook
  • Place pen between the liners; you may have to turn it for it to fit
  • Close hook on pen to secure it
  • Start writing using body of SAK
Much easier than trying to hold the pen by itself! Photobucket is completely and utterly FUBAR today, so I'm uploading the photos as attachments.

That's actually been the thing I've most used the hook for, so find the hook considerably less useful on SAKs that don't have Plus scales...

Apparently, another function the hook serves is generating a lot of discussion about it's usefulness or lack thereof  :P

If they'd just put a file area on the back of EVERY hook, it would be used way much more... IMO anyway...

Indeed - do all models sold by default with Plus scales get the hook?

When I was a kid (like 8 years old), I always saw the hook on my huntsman as a potential emergency grappling hook

They don't get the file hook... as far as I know the only models with the file hook are Compact, DofE and the supergiant SwissChamps - XXLT and XAVT.  Even the SwissChamp XLT doesn't have it!

The hook is paired with the scissors. The 2016 catalog shows the following Plus model options and models with Plus scales. All but one have scissors layer with the hook:
  • Explorer Plus
  • Compact
  • Traveler
  • Huntsman Lite
  • Traveler Lite
  • Cybertool Lite
  • Cybertool 29 - pen with no scissors or hook
  • Cybertool 34
  • Swisschamp
  • Swisschamp XLT
  • Swisschamp XAVT - what doesn't it have? (Didn't see a kitchen sink though.)
The only difference in the 2015 catalog is the discontinued Expedition, a Traveler with additional layers.

Do all of these have the nail file on the hook, though? Of the above I've only owned the Compacy (nail file) and CT 29 (no hook). The normal Explorer doesn't have the nail file, does the "Plus" model?

It doesn't.  Some confusion about whether you were asking about the file-hook or regular hook I think :)

I forgot about the electronic models - Traveler, Traveler Lite and Expedition Lite.  I think they may have the file hook too, though I don't have any of those to check.

The only hook with textured file I've encountered is on the Compact. In addition to the older Can Key Super & Deluxe Tinker without the hook, I've got a newer Super Tinker, newer Deluxe Tinker, Explorer Plus, 2014 Woodsman, Cybertool 34, Craftsman and Champion Plus. They all have smooth hooks. Don't know about any of the Swisschamp. Like many others I wish they'd put the Compact style hook on every model that has one.

My Huntsman with the Plus scales has no file on the back of the u.p.h. But I swaped back to regular cel scales and got an equally useless pin hole - also a u.p.h.

I meant that my Swissbianco Yeoman has the nail file on the hook.
Which I wish it didn't, as manicure features make a SAK look kind of "girly" in my head.

The Traveler Lite has the nail file hook.

AFAIK the UK's Duke of Edinburgh model also has the nail file hook, as it's basically a Compact, but with a rounded main blade and Phillips driver in place of the Corkscrew. See: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=DofE+Pocket+Tool

Working on farm equipment, pulling pins and accessing difficult to get at latches holding body panels (you've basically got to remove all the panels surrounding the hood to get to the dipstick on the Yanmar engine Deere compact tractors) are something hard to do without the hook, as pliers can damage those components. I also carry square bales with it, most weighing in at 30 lbs.

Dang! Thanks for the pics. Showed that to my wife. She keeps a Compact in her purse, but even with her small hands the pen by itself is awkward. With my huge mitts....Forget it! Until now.
