"In line" alternatives to the LM ratchet driver
on: March 23, 2024, 03:00:43 PM
Has anyone found a good alternative to the (semi-mythical) LM ratchet driver? I know a lot of people like the 711L, but I was hoping for something that'd work in-line rather than at the 90 degree angle. It seems like putting a male 1/4 on one end, a female 1/4 on the other, and a ratchet in the middle shouldn't be a crazy thing, but I can't find any. I'm pondering trying to cobble together some kind of monstrosity of bit extender to ratchet to bit or something, but I feel like if I had the pieces to make that work, I probably wouldn't need it. Am I just googling wrong?

I really wished I had a good answer for this

I even went to look at Aliexpress to see if they had something similar but I am not finding anything there even!  :ahhh

I really don't understand why LM doesn't just crank a bunch of these out and have enough for people to get them :dunno:

Sorry guys - Leatherman only sold one of these, and I have it.

There are a couple of Leatherman ratchet drivers listed on eBay - for $224 and $399.   :ahhh

Just seems like something any old tool company could make, and people would buy. A decent ratcheting screwdriver, with bits, is maybe $20. If people only wanted the ratchet part, you could probably still charge $20 and just pocket the extra. Lots of people have piles and piles of bits and non-ratcheting things to drive them lying around. Who wouldn't drop $20 to turn any bit driver into a ratchet screwdriver if they had a bunch of them?

They kind of exist. There are many companies that sell 3/8" ones. So, you could get one of those, and a couple of adapters to reduce 3/8" to 1/4" and then a 1/4" bit, and you'll have a Frankenstein version of the Leatherman one.

LaBear sells a handle and ratchet attachment. The attachment accepts 1/4" bits already, so all you need is an adapter to make the square 1/4" into a hex 1/4". Put a 1/4" hex into one slot, and then you can insert this into a driver, to make it a ratchet.

If the LaBear attachment had a hex male instead of a square, it would be good to go.
