Opinel forced patina.
on: February 29, 2016, 01:08:41 AM
Decided to try another forced patina on a Opinel. I always wanted to try a tiger stripe patina so here goes nothing. I am thinking I should of tried a slightly different method, but I will possibly touch on that more later. Its still setting so here are the pictures for now.

As SteveC pointed out in another thread this is a stainless model not carbon so this may not go as planned anymore.

I'm a big idiot for this one.  I predict it may slightly work. I predict it is very faint and looks like crap or just turns black and looks even worse.

All the more reason to go get one in carbon and try again. :pok:

I have a No7 in Carbon and it took a very nice patina (plain vinegar wipe down). Now it has a dark gun-metal-like colour.

I've given several knives a forced patina but stopped doing it. My carbon knives earn their patina the hard way, and are even more beautiful for it. :)

Nice one Capt  :salute:

One of the many things I love about this forum is the willingness to experiment with the tools we all love. You've taken a massed produced item and made it totally unique. Also it looks great.

Question is - have you turned your Opi into a tactical knife?  :D

I commented in the Opinel thread but let me say it again, this turned out awesome.  I really like the subtlety of the stripes on this mod.  Great job and goes to show it never hurts to try something even if other outcomes were planned.

It appears the acetic acid acts rather quickly.I was surprised it was strong enough to affect stainless steel and in such a rapid manner.

It looks cool and reminds me of Strider knives.

Thanks. I like how it turned out. I need to get a carbon model and do the same.

Definitely similar to Strider's Ghost Tiger stripe. :tu:
